Last time I traveled my main checked bag was right at 49 lbs and with the airline fee for being over weight being higher I was thinking about getting a Luggage Scale. Does anyone know if they really work? Is there a big difference in how well the $10 ones vs the $30 digital ones?

We got a fish scale at the sporting goods store. It was cheaper and worked great. It was nice to weight my bags in the Venice hotel before getting to the airport. Hook the lugggage and see if it's to big.

The luggage scale Katlady recommends works very well.
Also, as a general tip, I have been to airports where the scale was not calibrated correctly (though strangely enough they never seem to weigh the bags for less they they should ) I often end up with bags that are within 5 lbs lf the limits. I found the best way to deal with this is to politely tell the attendant that there must be some mistake and they you weighed your bag at home. This is normally enough to get them to use a different scale (which usually shows a difference of a few pounds) or they's just waive the fee because they don't want to bother.
The fish scale is a good idea becuase you can bring it on trips with you. As for a regular scale you cannot.

Most airlines charge about $20 extra for a suitcase that weighs more than 50 lb. but not 70 lb. and $100 extra for a suitcase that weighs over 70 lb. Thus, it's not that bad.
That said, the better solution is to bring two smaller suitcases rather than one big suitcase.
We also have the one cutiecat uses and it works great. We paid $10-$12 for ours at a luggage store. We use our home scale, compared and it comes out the same. We always make sure we are around 45 lbs to have some leeway for those "off" airport scales. Never been charged yet. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone I have gotten the information I was looking for. I really like the idea of using the fish one since I have been looking for an excuse to buy one. Thanks again.
