My 18 year old daughter wants to bring dress shorts with dark tights & a blouse for non formal evening. This look is popular for late teens in the UK. Would this look be OK? We will be on the Ruby princess.
The below is from Princess' website; i seems the dress shorts would be classified as inappropriate dinner dress on Princess. Canrival Cruises is one of the few cruise lines that allow dress shorts in the dining room. They also allow jeans. I hope that answers your question.

Onboard Attire
Princess makes it easy to know what to pack and what to wear when you're dining onboard. There are two designations for dress codes: Smart Casual and Formal.
Smart Casual Evenings:
Passenger attire should be in keeping with what would be worn to a nice restaurant at home. Inappropriate dinner dress such as pool or beach attire, shorts, ball caps and casual jeans (with fraying and/or holes), is not permitted in the dining rooms. Shoes must be worn.
Formal Evenings:
Evening gown, cocktail dress, or elegant pant suit for women
Tuxedo, dark suit or dinner jacket and slacks for men

If the tights are the same color as the shorts, I'm not sure whether anyone would notice or not. My concern would be that the maitre d' would notice and not allow her to join you at dinner. I really doubt that that would happen, but I would definitely suggest packing other clothing as well.

Many thanks
One of the frustrations that motivated me to switch from Princess to Celebrity a few years ago was Princess's failure to enforce the published standards of evening dress, so my instinct is that she probably would get away with it. Nonetheless, the shorts really would not be proper since Princess's published standard of dress explicitly exlcudes them. She would do better to wear a skirt of some sort rather than shorts. A miniskirt or a wrap skirt of any length would be fine.
