We are going on a cruise to S. America in March and I'm wondering how to go about renting a tuxedo for my husband, do we wait until we sail or should this be done sooner. Also what is the cost and is it for that one night only or for his use the entire cruise ? It seems so much easier to rent than to carry all of that in our luggage.

Usually you can arrange for this either when you board or ahead of time with the cruiseline.
Others can help you more on this if we knew what cruiseline you are sailing.
That cruiseline probably has its own section here on CM and folks that frequent that line would know best about how to go about renting the tux.
I wish all lines would rent Tuxes I have a cupboard full of formal stuff that is too old, too small, much better to hire I think, as long as they have a selection of sizes!!
Don't think I have said I particularly LOVE formal nights, in fact after EIGHT & FOUR semis on our last cruise it was a bit tedious. What I do think however is that if there is a dress code passengers should respect it & staff should uphold it. In the end I had to buy a jacket for our Azura cruise as they said they would uphold the Semi formal & I had no wish to offend (I was told I could only use the buffet & outside bars) they didn't enforce it anyway....

John,
I can see formal night with a tux or suit but having to cart around another jacket for semi-formal is ridiculous and trying to be like Cunard.
A good pair of slacks and shirt in the tropics woul suffice or shirt with tie.
Celebrity tried that routine a few years back.

Not only a jacket really Rob....my jacket/s didn't really go with the shirts & trousers I took for casual nights, so it's another outfit really, & all for originally THREE nights. I couldn't believe it when they said they were doing it on a Caribbean fly cruise for 28 nights with a luggage allowance of 23kg's! The annoying part was that I asked & was told I would not be allowed in any inside venues but in reality it was not enforced in any way, so I now have another jacket!
Stupid, try that when the Americans are the majority of the passengers and they would have a big issue.
Sea Princess for majority of Brits called it semi-casual and that was fine..

you need to order your tuxedo before your cruise, definately, there should be a form on your cruiselines web site with prices and details,or in your final document package-- your best bet is to go to a local tux shop and have your DH measured properly, submit those measurements to the cruise line, you can rent for one-night or for both nights, your tux will be delivered to your cabin, if you rent for more than one night you will get a fresh shirt for each night.
