Good morning Gang

Happy tea tuesday.

As the week rolls on, I hope that all the Gang is doing OK. The weather is really nice here in my neck of the woods and we have a busy day ahead of us. And it's nice that Mrs. TM can't complain about cold weather.

Hi Gang!!

TM the weather in your neck of the woods sounds wonderful!!

Sad day today in town....Two kids (15 & 17) went over to the lake by their house last night and were riding bikes when the lake not fully frozen cracked and the boys fell in. A neighbor heard yelling went over to the lake and heard the boys yelling... "help us we don't want to die" the man could not get any closer due to the cracks and putting his life in danger and called 911. The man did not hear the boys cries of help anymore. Authorities still looking for the bodies. So so sad.....

Well, we'll see if mom will come through. I'm not going to move if she will. There is no sense. I'll need the storage and space. I had/have my daughter in the master bedroom because when dad was here I needed to be in a bedroom by him where I could here him when he called. I told her I'd move the daughter to dad's old room and she could have the master. She will have room for her twin bed, tv, and loveseat, along with her other stuff, and there is a large walkin closet, plus she'll have her own bathroom. I also told her we'd get a landline for in there for her because she won't use a cell.

She was talking about moving into a senior center here though, in which case I'll go ahead and downgrade. I'm afraid after a while she'll need to move in with me. It might get cramped in the summer when my daughter is in.
Well the airfare to Houston went down today a little.

You sound like me....ready to move and rearrange things, people and rooms. I'm ready to do what I have to if parents are willing to move in. we talked about moving the kids into one bedroom or even buying one of those inflatable beds for the living room. We thought of putting up an addition to the house but I prefer not to do that as the already high taxes will go up not to mention another area to heat/cool and clean. Dad is not getting better...we shall see what this year holds.

CQ, we do what we can for our parents. I hope your parents don't wait too long, but I do understand that they don't want to give up their independence. It killed me to know my dad could not be in his own hometown, in his own home to die. It just wasn't possible. He did die at home here with me thinking he'd get to go home to mom though, so that was as so much better than it could have been.

Moiraine it's so difficult to watch your parents get older and start having health issues. I'm seeing some signs of dementia in both parents...What the heck else can happen????? It's one thing after the other. It's hard as I live 2 hours away so I make it there once a week. I was going 4 times a week however with work and family I was going crazy myself always running always on the go. They now pay an aide that comes in the morning and evening everyday. Taking it day by day see what happens...

on a brighter note.....looking at the Caribbean Princess, NCL Epic, Independence of the seas and Oasis.....Love the Oasis but don't think I want to go that high in rates....it's more then double the price of Princess. Biggest concern is that my son has other teens onboard to hang out with and he is not bored like he was on Breeze. Decisions decisions....

Good evening Gang

Since we are talking about Moms, I am going to tell you how my mom is doing.

We lived with her for a year ( 2009 ). In two 2010 we put her in a nursing home, which is close to where my son lives. Now after being there almost two years her health is better than it has been in the past 5 years. Her memory has improved quite a bit and she is happier than she was in her own home. When she was home she did not understand where she was and wanted to leave and ( go home ).

Now I call everyday ( even if I am on a cruise ). my son goes to see her three times a week and my daughters go to see her fairly often as well.
The staff at the home love her and my Mom allways tell me how nice they treat her.
We have made friends with other people whose parents are at the home and gets all kids of goodies from those people.
We do go back to Ct. to visit when we can, but she says you can save your money and just give a call.

Of course with her dimentia, she does not have a sense of time and her short term memory is the not best, but the Doctors can't believe that is has improved instead of getting worse.

She is a very sweet lady and has worked hard all of her life. Now that she can only walk a few steps, she says that she is lucky not to have to do anything.

Good Morning Gang,

Lot's of Mom talk - TM, good to hear your Mom is doing so well. Moiraine, good luck with getting your mother settled. It is nice that she reached out to you.

CQ - we did Princess in the Med 2010 and the age range was pretty mixed. They had a pretty big disco in the back. I think they are taking off some of the Skywalker's clubs - deck 19 aft. We are doing Caribbean Princess in late Fed. Probably will an older crowd. I know we felt pretty young when we cruised Feb 2011. Young crowd or old we are looking forward to Aruba and Curacao - haven't been to either.

Good morning Gang.

CQ, if you see signs of dementia in both parents and want them with you, you might need to get them with you before things go too far. I say that from horrible experience. You don't want to have to go to court to get custody of a parent.

TM, I am glad that you're mom is getting good care in a home. Some people actually do better there. My dad was in a home for a while and could not understand why. It was so bad the social worker asked my mom to take him back. She refused. In fairness, she couldn't take care of him, but by that time she was around the bend herself. My brother was still in denial our dad was that ill, and I was two hours away trying to take care of things. My mom fought me at first about taking my dad.

Anyway, TM. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. Some people do better at home and some do better in a nursing home. It seems you picked a good facility for your mom and she has plenty of family visits.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day.

You did not make me feel bad at all. It's allways a tough decision on how to take care of elderly parents.

TM I'm glad to hear your mom is doing ok!

Yeah some folks do better in a home. My dad would be fine in a home however my mom says she never wants to be in a home no matter what! There are good facilities and bad ones too...have to find the right one. My dad was in a home but only temporary for rehab for 5 weeks. they had a nice dining room and plenty of activities to keep the residents busy....bingo, musicians come in the afternoon and play, tea parties, pets drop by to visit, a halloween party...they have more of a social life in the home then me.

Moiraine what do you mean by going to court for custody of a parent? In the reading I'm doing I hear dementia does not happen overnight rather it takes awhile to be full blown. In the evenings my Dad will say "I am going to the other house" (they only have one house) or "the bedroom is upstairs" (they live in a one level home).

Thanks Bob I'm looking into the Crown Princess not Caribbean my mistake. just worry there won't be enough teens onboard. I'll give it some thought. Most people want a ship with few/no teens I'm looking for a ship with lots of teens.

Have a super day everyone!!!

CQ, when a person gets so far along they are no longer able to be legally responsible. You need to sit down with your parents now and figure out who they want to be their legal guardians when the time comes. Don't wait until they are already too far along. My family waited. It's a long and painful story. But I had to go to court to get guardianship of my dad, and for a while I thought I was going to have to fight my mom. Thankfully, I did not. But no one had prepared for what happened and it was a mess. My brother was in denial, and my mother was crazy, and I was trying to fix things from a hundred miles away. We all went nuts in the end. It's just better to have the legal stuff fixed up front for when a parent gets the point where they no longer have a say in what is going on with themselves. Get power of attorney early if they'll let you. Id think power of attorney, because guardianship is more when the **** hits the fan. Power of attorney is more for when something goes wrong.

CQ - I think if you cruise Princess at spring break there will be plenty of teens, but you are an big RC fan you might be happiest there. With my kids older teenagers aren't on my radar unless they are annoying.

As far as cruiselines go, when you become a big fan of one, the others just don't cut it.

Thanks Moiraine!! I learned something new...thanks for the info!

Bob I better chill out with the cruiselines and ships first I have to see if I can get the airfare and to where....at that point if airfare is workable then I'll have to see what ships depart from that port. I may not get on a ship at all spring break depends what the airfare does the next couple of weeks. If not then summer cruising it will be. I see Jetblue has alot of seats available on a few flights that would get me into florida however right now they are at $660. pp. My TA says when they lower the fare the tickets sell quick so I have been checking 10 times each day. I do need a Sat. to Sat. ship as that Sunday is Easter and I want to be home. So that narrows down my choices.

Yes I do Love Royal but I am up for trying different lines sometimes. I want to try the new princess ship "Royal" it looks very nice. and also NCL's breakaway right from my own backyard no air needed!

Good Morning gang!!

TM good luck finding low airfare to CT. ALthough it may happen since CT may not be a popular spring break destination.
I'm willing to pay more then usual to get to Florida I know the Month of March is spring break month but will not pay 600/700 dollars to get there. One of the ships I'm looking at has many cabins available and last night just added a resident rate so now it's $300. cheaper. going into final payment time so there will be resident rates and price drops on the ships I'm interested in.....However maybe not Oasis....but I can't see them selling an inside cabin at $1,750. pp plus tax....that is way to high. That rate has to come down unless they don't care about filling cabins.

tick tock tick tock....time will tell. Next big day for checking airfare drops is Tuesday. I'm still eyeing those flights that are half full and still alot of seats to fill.

Have a super day everyone!!!!

CQ/ACQ (airfare checker queen)

Spring Break is a tough time to book air - so many people want to fly the supply/demand curve is in the airlines favor. Especially for weekend travel!

Friends of ours just got back from Navigator of the Seas out of NOLA. We had almost booked that cruise before going to Princess for our upcoming trip. The DW wants to cast about a little bit on different cruise lines as well. Don't know that we will climb the ladder to Regent but c'est la vie.
