Default Sad news/ world cup bid

The US was bidding to host the 2022 world cup.

We lost to Qatar

Were those Fifa officials bribed or was the rope they were smoking a bit too strong

You did it relatively recently,(remember Diana Ross?) there isn't that much interest in as you call it "Soccer" compared to other places. How do you think we feel in the UK?? A great bid from the home of the game, with the best facilities (arguably) a final at the most famous stadium, haven't hosted it for almost 50 years...I think it's all these wars we are involved in that people don't like, but why should that affect who hosts a football tournament

JohntheDog

There are many more fans of the sport ( football or futebol as I call it ), in the US than in Qatar.
I don't believe that they even have any decent facilities in place in that small Middle Eastern country.
I was also disappointed that Russia got the bid for 2018. I was rooting for Portugal/Spain.

As a neutral Scot (now John don't laugh) - I was very disappointed for David Beckham that England was not successful. Oh how I wish DB was Scottish!

The BBC along with the London Times published investigative reports - quite rightly IMO - highlighting the alleged (?) corruption within FIFA - that did not help.

Russia and Qatar won simply because of $$$$, politics (Putin knew he had won - I wonder why?) along with Serge Blatter who did not want the World Cup to go anywhere else and that will not change. When I heard Serge Blatter describe the final presentation as 'excellent and remarkable' - the die was cast.

England only received 1 vote apart from their own - that speaks volumes.

I was so bummed when I heard this news. I was hope to go to some World Cup Game. No way I can afford or want to go to Quatar. The last men's World Cup played in the USA was in 1994. England didn't qualify for that World Cup. My Parents went to several of the game that were played in California. Last time England hosted appears to be in 1966. So that means England hasn't hosted a World Cup since I have been alive.

John you would be surprise how many Soccer (Futbol) fans there are in the USA. I watch La Liga matches whenever I can. I have Fox soccer channel. My parents have Gol TV I went over on Monday to watch the wonderful Real Madrid VS Barcelona game. Yah Barcelona.

I suppose, but it verges on religion status here, as one well known personality once said "football isn't a matter of life or death, it's more important than that!!" You support your team for life & that is it, no second or third teams, doesn't matter what division they are in or what they win. There can be pitched battles in the streets between rival fans & real hatred between certain groups. Just a game? sport? not really....not here.

And the well known personality was a Scot who managed a great Liverpool team!

Agree John, football is very tribal in the UK.

We just have to get over it and prove to FIFA in 2012 what a mistake they made with a successful Olympics.

Bottom line was the English FA just did not have enough cash - after all they could not afford to terminate Capello's contract or they should have sent a famous model like Russia did - lol

I wonder if Putin didn't bother going because he knew? I was shocked when the news flashed up we had gone out in the first round, I was sure we would win. Apart from political reasons, why? who would be better?

I think Fifa's raison d'etre was to take the Finals to new territory but with rampant racism prevalent in Russia - this could be fun to watch.

I agree with you - I thought Beckham and co had done a great job.

As I said I believe Putin stayed away because he knew he had it sewn up - now he flies in and gloats - it makes me sick and I'm not English!

I heard tonight that Qatar paid the former French captain, Zidane, $15 million to lobby on their behalf.

Bottom line - England and USA were 'stitched' up - they never had a chance.

I can't believe that a small country with no football to speak of can hold the world cup.
Is Qatar even a democracy?

Manuel

You know the answer $$$$ and I think they have promised to dismantle the stadiums afterwards and send them to Africa?

Democracy - what has that got to do with it? Russia?

John & TM - sorry to see the 2018 games go to Russia. I would more likely find myself traveling to England or Spain/Portugal for a match than Russia. Would I be allowed to travel at will?

I certainly have no interest to go to the desert in the middle of summer 2022 to watch a match. I'm not sure if they would let me wife attend. She might show some wrist or ankle.

Good move!

What Fifa needs is to get some people with common sense to run that organization.

Women would probably have more common sense in running FIFA and they could do no worse in running the world then men are doing.

As a matter of fact we could use more women in the US Congress and a woman President would not be a bad idea either.

It's been a tough spell for London, losing the 2016 Olympics and now the 2018 cup.

Sorry you have lost me - London is holding the 2012 Olympics; the same year as the Diamond Jubilee - have I missed something?

OK katlady - you can be the US rep and I'll have to be Scotland's.

We certainly could not have made a worse job of it.

As a Scottish Sunday newspaper put it - if Qatar can host the World Cup - why can't we?; our oil is largely gone but we have the following plus points:

We do know a little about football.
Some of us have been known to partake of alcohol.
We enjoy a party!

Oops sorry - I was really turned around. I was thinking about Paris being upset when London got the 2012 bid - of course Brazil scored the double with 2014 cup and 2016 Olympics - or am I still confused.
