The crew of the steamboat Delta Queen has produced a YouTube video asking Congress to continue the historic vessel’s 40-year exemption from the Safety of Life at Sea Act.
In the video, crew members stress not only the Delta Queen’s historical significance, but also the important role she plays in providing jobs for them and in bringing much-needed revenue to communities in 17 states throughout the entire Mississippi-Ohio River system. Vicki Webster, leader of the grassroots Save the Delta Queen Campaign, said, “Members of Congress must be made to realize that if they simply allow the Delta Queen to remain in operation, they will make a positive impact on our nation’s economy without spending one dime of the taxpayers’ money. This video is our way of reminding them—and their constituents—of that fact.”
Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) have both introduced bipartisan legislation that would allow the boat to continue in operation until November 1, 2018. The bills are H.R. 3852 and S. 3498.
