Field day for media

The news media seems to be biassed against the cruise industry. I can imagine that they will blow the event on the Carnival Splendor out of proporsion.

I went to sleep very early last night so I don't know if it made the news .I haven't had a newspaper since Saturday .

How can you blow an engine room fire with complete power loss, no refrigeration or air conditioning and 4,500 passengers with nothing to eat but spam "out of proportion?" That's news. The media have actually been quite restrained.

I agree. It is news. Let's hope they don't embelish the story like they are so good at doing.

It will be interesting to see who gets more coverage. The Allure of the Seas coming into Port Everglades or the Carnival Splendor.

The passengers will disembark, haggard and cranky, as I would be..They will have michrophones stuck in the faces the minute they step foot off the ship.

Some may think of it as an adventure, they will be in the minority, some will have gone with the flow..perhaps literally some will be angry as all get out, some will be contacting their lawyers, some will say Carnival did all they could under the circumstances..all will be thankful it's over, and, they are safe....as we will....

They got the best compensation they can get..a total refund, and, a free cruise...they also go away with stories to tell, for the rest of their lives..

The postings that will come, will be scorching!!!

Friendships are often formed from negative situations .I vividly recall the NYC blackout in the mid 60's . I was standed in Manhattan and met several strangers who became good friends .

Great point, same thing happens all the time on a cruiseship. You meet new people, say at your dinner table and become fast friends. Sometimes, its just for the week, other times, you plan your next cruise with them..

Donna ,in 1993 we did a non cruise tour ,became friendly with a couple living in Florida and have maintained a friendship via phone ,letter writing and e-mail .

We have done some cruises with couples that we met on a cruise.

We have only met one couple on a cruise that we continued to communicate with post cruise .However ,there is a CM couple who will be on our cruise .They are primarily lurkers but we've been e-mailing since January and are looking forward to meeting them.

Is it just me or is the media particularly biased towards CARNIVAL cruise line?? It seems other lines have similar or other events which dont get anywhere near the same media attention...

This ship had two of the worst casualties that you could possibly have at sea -- (1) a fire and (2) a complete loss of propulsion -- in the same incident. Each of these casualties puts a vessel and all aboard in grave danger.

Thankfully, the crew was able to bring the fire under control. Also, thankfully, the currents did not push the vessel into a reef or shoal waters before the tugs arrived at the scene. But that is not the point. The point is that neither casualty should have occurred in the first place. Each of these casualties had the potential for complete disaster.

Which other cruise line has come close to an incident of this gravity in recent memory?

And to their credit, the media reported the whole story -- Carnival's efforts to get emergency provisions to the ship (with the help of Uncle Sam's Navy), even the ship's eventual return to San Diego with all passengers and crew safe.

But safety at sea is no accident.

Norm, a former naval officer who understands only too well the real dangers posed by this incident.

Henry, did you get together with the "LURKERS"? If they are Cruisemates then they are surely wonderful people

I attended a Meet and Greet .51 people attended .I personally met the Lurkers ,took pictures of them and got together with them while on the cruise .They are truely wonderful people.
