Post Dousing the flames on QM2

It has been reported on other sites that the QM2 had a fire onboard yesterday, a report complete with all the hype and speculation we've come to expect.

So here is a report from a traveller currently on board. I will be interested to know, what, if anything made the news in the States and Canada .....

1. Good morning from the eastern seabord of the USA as the QM2 continues her passage ‘on time and on course’ for a New York arrival tomorrow morning.

Well done Hampshire Thorn for the prompt report of the fire onboard yesterday evening. There was indeed a fire in one of the two Gas Turbines and Malcolm is very correct, these are auxiliary units situated high at the stern end of the ship on Deck 12.

They serve the purpose of providing additional power to the ship’s propulsion pods. One Gas Turbine had been in use all day as the QM2 was riding, more than successfully, a Force 11 Gale. Interesting to note that two other ships left Quebec the same day as us, The Celebrity Summit and Silver Whisper. Both turned back into the St Lawrence River when faced with the Force 11 and will not make there next destination on time. QM2 took it all perfectly in her stride: it’s what she is all about.

Anyway, back to the fire incident. The actual time was around 8.00pm and {names removed} were 15 minutes into the Cocktail Party, when the first ‘assessment’ broadcast was made.

Within minutes there was another broadcast to summon the crew emergency teams to the scene of the incident. Most officer’s left to attend their stations but the party definitely continued and the pianist continued to play.

By 8.15 the Captain made a broadcast to say that the fire had been in the exhaust lagging of the Gas Turbine and was now safely extinguished. There was an element of the surreal as gusts at the party continued to down champagne while many crew members either busied themselves or began to muster at their ‘stations’ dressed in their life jackets. Waiting staff were soon back at full strength and the party continued till 9.00pm.

The whole incident was an pertinent lesson in the calmness and confident manner that the officers and crew conducted themselves in the true traditions of British seafaring. There was never any mention of the passengers needing to return to staterooms to collect their life jackets and no mention of lifeboats.

Incidentally, as this is not a trans Atlantic leg there are no dogs onboard. {other reports had pets being evacuated from the ship]

It's good to know that everything was handled swiflty & professionally

Alan
