Default Handicapped train travel in Italy

My wife who is in a wheelchair and I are planning on taking a train from Livorno to Florence and back for the day on May 30th when the Celebrity Millennium is in port. Just wanted to know if anybody else has done this and did you get help at the stations getting on and off the train? We would be taking a taxi from the dock to the train station in Livorno and that should be fine. Just wondering if we need to give the people at the train station prior warning or can we just show up say about 30 minutes before our train and let them know we need help getting on the off.
