Default Single Dad with Two kids.

I am single with two kids, 8 and 5. I am thinking about cruising on Disney. If anyone with cruise experience has any better ideas let me know. I want to have fun with my kids but hope to meet other singles my age. Is this the right cruise for me? Any info. would be helpful....

Hi,
Well I would say DCL is the way to go for your kids. Ages 5 and 8 are perfect for a DCL cruise. You will find lots of family events you can do with your kids, as well as the kids clubs for them so you can have some time for yourself. DCL has many adult only things too. Adult shows, nightclubs with live music, adult pool and hot tubs with the Cove cafe too. Several classes and tours are adult only too, wine tasting, artof entertaining classes et....
As far as meeting other singles go, I have to admit, most are married. However DCL does have a singles meet, at least on the 7 day cruises. It is usually the first day and includes snacks and crew members who are great at helping people break the ice when they meet. So that would give you an opportunity to meet other singles on board, if they attend.
Once you decide on a date for your cruise i would advise you post the date on this thread and on the dis boards, and perhaps someone else who is a single will respond to it. On the Dis board it is the most used DCL site i have ever seen. www.dcltribute.com Just get to the cruise meets site, scroll down until you see your date and then post on it, if you dont see your date, then you can start a thread for it. Usually by the time we cruise we have 25 or more families on our thread and we all meet the first day on board. many take that time to introduce their kids to other kids so they will see a familiar face in the clubs.
I have had several single parents post on our past cruises and some singles who are just going along for a family reunion and they too were looking for other singles to socialize with on board.
On www.crisecritics.com I have a post for 9/23/06 right now and there is a sinlge mom who has a post like you, she has 2 sons, they are older than your kids, so you might check it out oo. But the dis boards is really your best source for meeting other sinlges, just because more people read it, so your chances are better.
RCCL also has great kids programs, I dont know about singles meets on their cruises. But DCL does have one.

Good luck,
mom x4,grandma x4
Kathleen

Carnival also has a great kids program. Their shorter cruises also tend to attract quite a few singles, or single parents with children. I did the 4 night Inspiration out of Tampa with my two kids in August and met a lot of singles on board.

Not single, but we have cruised DCL with our kids. They loved it. We had a nice family time. There were other singles on board--mostly female Disney nuts. My brother in law came along- then single in his early 30s and had no problem finding people to hang out with. There are some all adults area (spa, pool, forward clubs after 9 PM) and they enforce this very well. For example you'll see kids walking past the adult pool when they come up the forward stairs, but the crew doesn't let them hang around. There is no casino.

The kids programs are open late and there is no additional charge once the kids are in the 3 + age groups. Our kids liked the programs well enough, but they're not joiners, and were never into group activities at all.

If you can't stand the idea of being locked onto a ship with Mickey and pals-- you might want to try another line. I love Disney, husband tolerates it because it's a nice, clean environment for the kids, and the kids love it too, so the Disney atmosphere is good for us, while husband sucks it up and smiles.

I have cruised as a single dad going on the 5th time next month with my kids who were 5 and 8 the first time and now 9 and 13. Disney is nice I am sure but less party atmosphere and less single moms to choose from. I always go RCI, fares much less than Disney and a lot nice the Carnival. In the 5 cruises with my kids, have not failed to meet single moms or girls to party with. Have cabin to myself until 1 AM while they have fun in Adventure Ocean. PM me for more info.

Default Just off the Magic this morning....

Hi there,

My advice would be to run, run, run from Disney if you are hopeful re meeting other single parents. The ship seems to roll up the sidewalks past 9 pm with the exception of the adult activities which include couples & few to no singles. Even the Single Mingle activites included only the crew (and me...).

Default Great for kids, you should have luck

We had gone on the Disney cruise with our married children and their kids. The kids and adults had a blast. I'm sure the cruise you go on will surely have some singles. So, keep your hopes up.

Your kids are in the "zone" for loving a Disney cruise. If you want to party, take Dae the Wave's advice. He is also correct, Disney is more expensive. Our kids are older (12 & 14) and now like RCI as well as Disney.

Hi, I have cruised the DCL as a single mom the past 2 years. I have a 10 year old son who loves it. I have met single parents every cruise. At dinner they have set us with other singles. Our last Christmas Cruise we sat with a father and his 2 young daughters and a single mom with her son. We had a great time. I have nothing to compare since we only have been on Disney. It all depends on what you like to do. Disney is not a big party boat which I prefer. Others like the party nightlife. Disney as we know it is all about "Family". They are trying to cater more these days to single parents or those traveling alone which is great. Good luck!!!
