Default Passports?

We're cruising for the 1st time on Disney in May, and will be on the 3 night cruise. How important is it to get a passport? I'm getting one because of elderly parents, but had to pay almost double for it. Do the other 5 adult members of my party need one? Thanks!

You will be ok as long as your cruise is before december 31 07.
Which it is.
cruisers have to have passports by 1/1/08
If your flying out of the country you ned them now, so your ok.

Make sure the birth certificates have the raised seal. or they wont accept them.

Some people have hospital certificates that they think are birth certificates, they look just like them. These are NOT ascceptable.

So make sure you have the raised seal. If your not sure, order new birth certificates.

interesting. Do you know if Coco cay, Nassau, or key west require a passport? My dad is in the process of getting his passport they are so backed up that he had to make an appointment...it's not til April 2nd.
I'm wondering if he even needs one now. Cruising in August. If not, is it a whole lot of hassel if he just brought his birth certificate with the seal?

If your flying out of the U.S you are required to have a passport . They just changed it a few months ago, hopefully it hasnt changed again.
they said anyone flying to Mexico.Bahamas, Europe Canada, just anywhere outside the united states has to have a passport. I think that became effective 1/1/07

Cruises got an extention until 1/1/08 to have to have passports
You can go to google and search itout to find the site with the exact legal description. That is what I did, but it has been a few months ago.

You can find all the passport info at www.travel.state.gov about the new regulations.

Don't forget that if your last name on your drivers license and your birth certificate doesn't match, you'll also have to provide proof to link the two (like marriage certificate, adoption papers...)

The one caveat is that should something happen to you during your trip (God forbid) and you have to fly home, having a passport will make it SO much easier. I recommend getting one if you have time. They will be required eventually, so why not go ahead and not have to deal with it later?

also right now people are having to wait up to 4 months to get them back. In January we were told 6 to 8 weeks, now they are telling us up to 12 weeks or longer. many have posted lately they are getting told to expect up to 5 months. you can expedite them but even that may be 3 month wait.

Our cruise is in 2 weeks, so we had to pay for more birth certificate just in case we dont have our passports back by then. at the time we applied they assured us we had more than enough time to get them, now they say who knows for sure when they will arrive. They keep extending the date when I check.

frustrating!!!

We finally got out passports right after we got back from our cruise.
At least we are ready for the next one!! It took 4 months to get them.

Get your passports! They've put additional staff and added hours in the Passport Offices to speed up the process. If you are really in a time crunch, pay extra for expedited services. My clients got their passports in 10 business days with expedited service.

You can always go to the main post office in your hometown or city - they have passport offices, too. Go first thing in the morning at opening and you shouldn't have to wait too long.

Default $800 +

Well it's been several weeks since I posted the "Passport" question. Now 2 weeks prior to cruising and $800+ less money, we all now have our passports. I think I have a better feeling and they are good for 10 years (another reason to cruise again soon!).
