Default converting euros

I am flying out of JFK to Barcelona; would it be better to convert to euros at JFK or wait until I get to Barcelona; Last time I used my ATM card in France and it didn't give option to use savings or checking; however, I had all my funds in checking; When I got back, I had to quickly transfer back to savings, cause that's what they took it from. I found an American Express office in Nice, and hopefully I will find one in Barcelona. thanks

I would use the ATM route
We opened an online bank account strictly for travel no need to worry about which account

I put enough in for the trip if I run short I can transfer from my regular bank account.

Using an ATM in the county whose money you need is always the best option, that will get you the best rate. Rates at airports are usually not very good. Currently the exchange is approx. $1.40 = € 1.00

Have fun.

thanks, you just made up my mind to use the atm; I think I am going to open up another checking account from another bank with an atm. last time I used atm, it didn't give option to use either checking or savings, they took funds out of savings, however, everything was put into my checking; I had to transfer funds back when I got home;

ATM is the way to go from an exchange point of view, but ask your bank what fees, if any, they will charge on using a foreign ATM machine. My credit union doesn't charge anything.

Also try to become familiar with some of the more popular ATM scams and frauds and avoid them.

Finally, watch out for pickpockets - Barcelona is famous for them.

Default converting euros

thanks for the advice. I will see them tomorrow and find out about the fees. I am also going to only have the checking account active; apparently when I used it before, it didn't give a choice to use checking or saving and the ATMs in Nice took all my money out of savings; so I had to go to American Express office and cash in all my travel checks to EUROS. I have a small inside the bra travel bag which all my good stuff is going in.

You can also get $ changed to Euros at Guest Relations or draw from the Casino and charge it to your sea pass card if you wish, or use the ATM onboard. I think the ATM's charge $% per transaction if I remember right..

ATM service in spain is great, so put some money in both accounts to be sure.
