Default Cruise Lines get sued over shows

Forbes Magazine is reporting that Jim Jacobs who co-wrote the musical Grease with the late Warren Casey, has filed a $100 million class-action lawsuit against 17 cruise lines, many reportedly owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises (nyse: RCL - news - people ) and Carnival (nyse: CCL - news - people ).

He claims the ships have performed the retro show without permission or paying royalties violating U.S. and international copyright laws, and exhorts them to desist from producing unlicensed material by Jacobs and other writers.

I for one would love to see the end of any ship board shows involving Grease. There has to be something better than this for entertainment.

If only it were that easy!! What about all the studies that show the 50's generation now entering the prime cruise passenger demographic profile?

Does this mean I have to listen to "Greased Lightning" on every ship? IF so, I guess I will have to skip the shows for awhile.
I often wonder if the 50's are more popular now than in the 50's.
If a show is really good, I guess it is good for ever, but I have never enjoyed Grease.

Actually, the 50s were MOST popular during the 70s, when Happy Days was on the air, The Stray Cats were hot, and Grease and other related shows came out.

I performed quite a few years ago in a regional production of Forever Plaid. Absolutely great nostalgic show. Being a one act 90-minute show, and extremely popular among boomers and WWII generation, I think the cruise industry would be spot on to bring it to the sea...any entertainment folks out there?

As for Grease, I agree with Paul on the popularity of songs from this era. As the song goes..."And we'll always, be together..." It will always be a hit. Steve

Default High School Performances

Does this mean that high schools who do such performances are also in violation of the copyright laws. Don't have kids in school just wondering.

Many high schools have been sued. Usually to make a point. They must pay royalties or a set price if the school presents a copy righted play.

Default Being sued

The cruise lines know better than this. Suing may be the only way to get their attention. Yes--local high schools have been sued for infringement. There is always a person that will turn you in.

With so many lawyers in this country, everyone gets sued one time or another.
The way I see it if a musical is never done it will be forgotten and no roayalties will exist.
