We will be in Barcelona for 4 nights in October. Should one rent an apartment ? Are there any pitfalls. We will be traveling with another couple and it looks like sharing a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment would be 50% less expensive than getting 2 hotel rooms.
We always use Hispanos Siete Suiza in Barcelona. It is a block from the Sagrada Familia, the metro is right there, and the ATM on the corner. This is an "apartment hotel". We have had both a 2 bedroom unit, with balcony, 2 baths, full kitchen and also a 3 bedroom unit with 2 1/2 baths, a gigantic terrace, washer/dryer, kitchen, etc. They have a very nice breakfast buffet, and a wonderful restaurant. I have the link but am not sure I am allowed to post it on this board.
id go with the cheapest option...you'll be out on the town most of the time! but pensions (zero star hotels) in europe are of a high standard and a 3 star hotel in europe is much higher then a 3 star in the states. good luck!
I have to disagree. You really have to pay attention and research a European 3* hotel. Many 3* hotels may not have a private bathroom. This happened to us in Italy. Also, you may have separate twin beds, no air conditioning or elevator.
I use Priceline for most reservations and never even think of bidding on anything less than a 4* hotel.
In regard to the OP's question. I would go with the apartment "but" do research on the unit and make sure it is in a fairly good district. There are some areas of the Gothic district and just a few blocks off Las Ramblas that aren't the greatest to walk around at night. There isn't much violent crime but pickpockets and purse snatchers are common.
