Default Med Cruise

I am going on the Millennium (9/4/01) 12 night Legacies cruise (ports - Istanbul, Ephesus, Cyrus, Cairo, Athens, Naples, Rome, Nice/Monte Carlo, Barcelona). Has anyone take this cruise or one like it that can give me an insight on the ship and the ports of call? I have never taken a cruise before and do not know exactly what to expect.

Thanks.

There are several THICK cruise-ship books available at Borders and Barnes & Nobles. These often have special sections that help explain (sometimes with a star system) the varous ports and give advice on what to do.

Also consider buying Insight Compact Guides ($7.95) for each city, when possible. Great color pictures, maps and text! Very light and easy to carry.

Big hint. Avoid tours that push shopping too much. (Paying money to pay money!) and that include lunches (try to eat on your own in local fast food OR nice place). Lunches on a tour waste up to two hours and often give you a chance to talk to other Americans who are usually complaining about SOMETHING-- often the food--which they really had foisted on them by the shore excursion company!

Experience the country! You're paying for it with your cruise ticket and plane ticket! Right?

Good luck!

I have taken both the ship and visited these ports. I suggest you e-mail me with specific questions you have about ports or the ship. It's a wonderful itinerary.
But be prepared to be exhausted -- everyone is off the ship by 8:30 a.m. and you stumble back around 4:00.

There are certain places you really don't need a tour, either..

Dear Anne,

I think that I have Istanbul, Ephesus, Athens and Rome figured out tour-wise. I am arranging for private tours in these ports. My uncle is 80 years old and I need to go at a slower pace then the big group tours.

The ports that I do not have enough information to make any decisions are Limassol Cyprus,Cairo, Naples/Capri and Monte Carlo/Nice/Cannes. Do you have any insights on the tours offered in these ports? In Cairo, I believe that we will stick with the large group for security reasons. I can not find out anything about Limiassol. This is a substitute for Haifa. What is there to see in Capri? We have the choice of Pompei, Capri or Amalfi (?) Coast. We know that we do not want to do any more ruins, so we thought Capri would be nice. What do you know about the tours for the coast or Capri? In VilleFranche, we think that we will do it ourselves and go to the Casino & Aquarium in Monte Carlo.

Any thoughts or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cindy Hardy

Dear Cindy,I am also in the process of arranging aMed. cruise for my family .I see that your father is around 80 and so is my mother and mother-in-law. We shall also be visitng Ephesus , Athens, and Rome. What ideas did you come across for private tours which might be lest exhausting for older people?ThanksCindy Hardy wrote:

Dear Ralph,

We decided to take as many private tours as possible so that we could tour at my uncle's pace and not have to keep up with a large tour group. I have researched several ports of call for private tours. I you are interested in any specific port, let me know and I will email you the websites or email addresses that I have come across. Which cruise are you taking? What is your sailing date? Are you mother and in-law more interested in shopping than sight-seeing? It would be easier to just rent a car and driver if that is the case.

Anyway let me know what you need and I will get you my information.

Cindy

Saw you are researching the same route we are taking in 2002 - would so appreciate if you could email me or post your info (including decisions as to why you chose a particular tour). Hope you have a wonderful cruise!!!

Anne:

I have seen some of your other postings and was very impressed with your depth of knowledge. We will be cruising on the R2 ,Barcelona to Venice, departing on Aug 1. I'm wondering if you could give me some advice on ship tours versus private tours for

Barcelona
Marseille
Nice
Ajaccio
Livorno
Civitavecchia
Naples
Messina
Corfo
Dubrovnik
Venice

I have read so many different opinions that I'm lookking for guidance. Our only parameter is to make this the trip of a lifetime for my husband and I. It is his first trip to Europe and I wanna get him hooked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Betty
