Can anyone give me an idea of the type of weather to expect on a May or June sailing to the Scandinavian countries, Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia. Would June be a better choice in terms of the weather? Thanks.
We Did a Baltic cruise in July this year and can tell you the weather is very unpredictable! We followed the advice in our tour book re estimated temps and in reality they weren't anywhere near accurate! We were in Oslo during a week long heat wave(mid to upper 80's) and In Peterhof we were caught in a rainstorm where it had been sunny and hot not 5 minutes earlier! Best advice we were given was to dress in layers and always take rain gear. Oh, have great time-it's a wonderful itinerary!
My guess is that the closer you are to the end of July or the beginning of August, the better the weather will be. The Baltic Sea is considerably further north than any part of the "lower 48" states, so even summer weather there tends to be pretty cool by our standards.
On my last cruise, I encountered cool weather even considerably further south (70's in Le Havre and Rouen, France) in July.
The warmest month in St. Petersburg is usually July. The weather in the second half of May and in June is usually the same. If you want to choose between May and June, I'd recommend coming to St. Petersburg in May, since there are too many tourists in June here. In May there are less crowds. ESTONIA CELEBRATES MOTHERS' DAY
May 12. Mothers' day in Estonia is an important day, not just for
mothers, but also for family history and ties. This year like other
years many families gave flowers to their mothers, others took their
mothers out to Estonia's many restaurants or enjoyed the sun in
outdoor cafes, however, as usual the focus always seems to be on
Equally important for many people Mothers' Day is a time to
tend family graves in Estonia's beautiful forest like cemeteries. As
the weather warms up and the trees show their new green growth, it
seems that much of the country's population go with garden tools and
watering cans to rake up last years leaves, plant new flowering shrubs
and lay flowers on the graves of past generations.
Some weather news (archive of one of Estonian newspapers)
Average temeperature in May +9...11 º, but daily temperature can be about 20 or even more.
Usually June is our real summer month.

We were supposed to be in Scandinavia the first of June last year, but had ship problems in Amsterdam. It was pretty cool and gray as we headed into the North Sea towards Oslo...of course that is as far as we got. I think May and early June are likely to be cool that far north, but layers are always smart. We are heading back to try again this year. Northern Europe always requires being prepared for showers.
