Golden Princess 15 day cruise, Venice to New York City

we are booking on the Golden Princess sailing on Aug 30,02 for the 15 day return cruise to New York City. This will be our first European cruise. All our others have been in the Eastern and Western Caribbean plus the Panama Canal. This will be a whole new experience for us.

Phil,

I am in the same boat as you literally and figuratively speaking. Will be on that same cruise. Are you a part of the group noted at cruisecritic.com? There's about 50 people that will be getting together for a cocktail party.

I am paying my TA tomorrow for this cruise. I am shocked at the price of airfare though. I am looking at about $1,300 from Phoenix. Is this inline with what my fellow cruisers are paying?
Thanks,
Lu Ann

LuAnn:

I was amazed as well for the airfare from Cleveland. The cost from Princess is about $900. (My roommate is coming from LAX and that was about $1100 for air.) When I checked out airfares on my own, the lowest I saw (online) was about $1200 with the dates needed. Last year when I travelled with a Perillo tour, the air add-on was around $600 for a full round trip (Cleveland to NYC to Rome). So I was kind of surprised to hear the $900 from Princess for the air portion. There might be some deals out there somewhere that would offer lower airfares, but I couldn't find any. Another thought is that if I had booked the trip earlier, I might have received a lower airfare. My cruise was booked with Princess just about 3 weeks ago. I might have missed out on the cheap seats on the plane!

Thanks for the input Angela, it's nice to know we are in the same boat regarding that airfare! My travel agent is now searching for fares with "consolidators", (companies that buy blocks of seats), if she can't find a cheaper fare I will go with the Princess rate. I was also suprised to find out roundtrip airfare from Phoenix to Venice is almost the same price as just ONE WAY! I will post if I find a cheaper fare.

One-way fares are always high; even in the US round-trip airfares are a much better bargain. The reason the Perillo add-on was so much less is that it was probably round-trip, while the Princess fare is only one-way, or perhaps US-Venice and New York to your home city. The $900 Princess fare from Cleveland sounds in line.

Thanks for the input. It would be interesting to know if LuAnn's TA gets a deal with a consolidator. Not that I would change my plans -- I find a great deal of value in having that Princess person waiting for me at the gate and escorting me to the right place to be! There's a price to pay for hand-holding!!

Does anyone know who is the cruise director on the Golden Princess for this Aug 30 Transatlantic sailing? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on tours they could suggest for our ports of call: Venice, Naples, Florence, Lisbon and Porta Delgada?

MJ:

There are lots of people on this cruise chatting at a Cruise Critics area. There's been discussion of tours. If you're not familiar with that, you might want to go and see what's been discussed. They're even getting everyone together for a special cocktail party. Here's the link to it:

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/2/O...44&f=887097554

Somewhere there is a link to the 8/30 Golden Transatlantic sailing -- part 5 is the most current, but you can look back into parts 4, 3, 2, 1 and see what was discussed.

As for myself, since I've been to Venice, Florence, and Naples, I don't need to be so ambitious with touring these cities as if this were my first visit there. There is just tons to see in Florence -- museums, churches, etc. Naples has Pompeii which is spectacular, but being I've been there and done that, I'm opting for the Amalfi coast drive to Ravello and Positano. (Sorrento and Capri are beautiful in case you want to check that out.)

Good luck with your decision! So many things to choose from!

My TA did get a better deal with the consolidator. Saves us $400 (200 each for my husband and I)! I have more gambling money now, hehehehe
