Westerdam 8/29
We are looking forward to some new ports this trip but I have some questions. Any tips on transfers from Civitivecchia to Rome's Airport? How far is the pier from the Athens airport? We took the cruiseline transfers last time but I can't believe that's our only option. We are also hitting Dubrovnik, Monte Carlo, Palermo, Cagliari Sardinia, Tarragona Spain, Florence, Tunisia and Palma de Mallorca. Any tips on independent tour operators or even doing the ports on our own? My mom is older and has a bad knee. Thanks.

Re: Westerdam 8/29
We were on a med cruise at the beginning of June - our common ports are Dubrovnik and Monte Carlo. We walked the wall in Dubrovnik - the ship had a shuttle to the old town for $10 - later realized we could have walked to it (which we would have preferred) - we went out for a run near the dock early in the morning and saw when were on the bus that we had been not too far away. In any case the old town of Dubrovnik is not large and easily explored on your own (no cars allowed in the walled part of the city).

Monte Carlo can also be walked on your own (although a good map helps to get where you want to go).

Have fun!

The port of Piraeus is at least one hour drive from the new Athens airport depending upon the traffic. There is a public bus that runs from the port directly to the Airport. This is your least expensive option. Taxis are not expensive in Athens, you could take a taxi from the ship to the airport. Your ship may offer a bus transfer. For 2 persons the ship's bus transfer may cost more than 2 persons in one taxi.
