Stay at a hotel in St. Mark's. The Cavaletto is nice. Get to the ship by water bus or water taxi. Get to the ship as late as possible, because you'll be on the ship for days but you'll only be in Venice for hours, and Venice is a lot more interesting than the ship.

Venice is the most magical city on this earth. I agree with the other two posters, stay around St. Marks. There are some quite reasonable hotels nearby. The Hotel Kette and the Columbine come to mind. If you want to stay more upmarket, there is the Metropole, Monaco and Grand Canal, Hotel Londre, Danielle etc.

I have found this website to be invaluable.

Hotel prices are not cheap compared to other cities but remember this is a very special city.

We will be there around the 16th October and I cannot wait.

I leave for Venice on July 30. I have a reservation at the Comfort Hotel Diana, San Marco - Calle Specchieri for 110 euros per night. You can make a reservation at choicehotels.com See you in Venice!

We'll be staying at the Locanda Orseolo which is just behind St. Mark's Square. Look it up on tripadisor.com and read the glowing reviews. The price is reasonable, not cheap but good for Venice.
