Default Warnemunde/Berlin

Trying to decide whether to take ship's tour of Berlin or just go it on our own from Warnemunde. Would appreciate some guidance from those who've done it on their own, as well as those who've gone with the ship's tours.

If you did it on your own, how was the trip from the port to Berlin (time, cost, hassle)? How did you get around in Berlin, did you have time to really see the city, and would you do it again on your own or would you opt for a shore excursion?

For those who did the ship's tour, what did you get to see, and would you do it again or opt to do it on your own next time?

Our cruise offered a "transportation only" tour to Berlin.

It is a 2 1/2 hour train ride to and then another 21/2 hour train ride return.

I would HIGHLY recommend taking the ship's train transportation ONLY and not take a site seeing tour. You can do your own touring in the 4 hours available.

If you take the ship's transportation and there is a breakdown, the ship will wait for you. If you do independent travel to Berlin and you are late in returning, then the ship will leave without you!!

It is very easy to rent a car from Avis, who will bring the car to the ship. Having an international cell phone is a good idea in case there are any problems. The drive to Berlin on the Autobahn is a piece of cake, and my husband loved that part. We met Nick of Berlin Walks at Charlottenberg Palace and took his Mercedes van for a fabulous tour. We had arranged the tour with Nick by e-mail. We particularly wanted to see the Perganmon Museum, which was amazing, but we also did a lot more.

Berlin was very hot the day that we were there, and I understand that train was horrible since it was not air-conditioned. Be sure to get a map from Avis regarding returning the rental car...that was our only problem...but even with getting lost, we still returned to the ship before the train passengers did.
