Default Train from Civitavecchia to Florence?

We're ending our Grand Princess cruise in Civitavecchia on 8/6/05, and will be travelling to Florence on our own from there. Is it better to take the train from Civitavecchia to Florence (via Rome, which adds on a bunch of miles) or to get a cab to Orvieto and take the train to Florence from there? Mapquest says it is approximately 1.5 hours driving, 61 miles. I'm really counting on the experience of this group to HELP!! This is our first cruise outside of the US (unless you count the Mexican Riviera, which we count as California).

Thanks,
Kathy in California

Comments:

Would depend on budget

1. Cabs in Italy are not cheap

Nice ride to Orvieto

2. However, train ride to Rome - sightsee outside window
