Did the British Isle cruise on Golden Princess in July, 2005. The trip was excellent. Did a pre-cruise with Princess, Paris and London thouroughly enjoyed it, had a great group of people. Left from Southampton on the cruise. Visited Dublin, Wales (one of the highlights of the trip), Belfast (giants causeway at Bushmill is awesome have lunch at the inn), Greenock Scotland for Glasgow area, Kirkwall Scotland in the Orkney Islands (one of the highlights of the trip), South Queensferry Scotland for the Edinburgh area (go to Sterling Castle), and back to Southampton. Did a back to back on this trip and visited western Europe on the second cruise, which made the trip very memorable. I would recommend Princess, although I did notice that the 2006 cruise did not include the Orkney Islands which is a bummer, especially if you are a history buff. Visiting Scapa Flow was very intersting and seeing the Viking ruins and history was also very interesting. If you go I hope you enjoy the area as much as we did.

We did the Golden Princess British Isles cruise in June, 2005. Would recommend going at least as late as June, as the two cruises before ours both missed some of the tender ports, and there are a lot of them on this itinerary.

We did this one sort of back to back with the Grand Mediterranean, which made for a nice pairing, with three days in London between them. Took the Princess shuttle from Victoria Station to Southampton, which was fine, although some folks we talked to did a nice tour out of London to Bath and Stonehenge first, then Southampton.

We mostly did on our own tours, used Princess to get into Glasgow and Edinburgh, mostly because we didn't really understand the rail system well enough to try it on our own over those distances. The hop on hop off bus tours in all the major cities on this itinerary are a good value, and the Dublin Pass is a good value, as well, if you are planning to spend the full time in port in the city, as it has some evening attractions as well. We purchased it in advance and also added the transportation voucher giving us access to the public transit system. Took the bus out to Malahide Castle, as well as around Dublin.

Kirkwall was certainly a highlight for us. Really enjoyed Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar. Edinburgh was a complete delight, as well.

Belfast was interesting but we'd probably like it better without rain and having colds. Ditto Glasgow. Fortunately, we'll be doing both of those on our transatlantic this fall, as we didn't really give either place much more than a cursory going over. Maybe this time we'll be well and the weather will be better!

Even in June, the weather was cool (for us anyway - we're from Hawaii) and it rained a lot, so pack an umbrella, slicker, and some sweaters for layering.

We did the Princess British Isles cruise on Golden Princess in June, 2005. Ports were Dublin, Holyhead, Belfast, Greenock(Glasgow) Kirkwall, South Queensferry(Edinburgh). Dublin is a nice long stop, arriving at 7 am, departing around midnight. Holyhead is a ferry port and good place for castle tours. Belfast we did the city tour on the hop on hop off bus and it was very interesting. The other big tour there is to the Giant's Causeway on the Antrim coast. Greenock/Glasgow, we did the Princess city "on your own" tour again, but when we go back this fall will be doing Loch Lomond up to Stirling Castle on a private tour. Glasgow was fine, but we want to see more of the countryside this time. Kirkwall was one of the highlights of the cruise for us. We went to Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar, as well as all around the town itself which is very interesting. Edinburgh was the other real highlight, and we will go back there and spend more time on a land based trip someday. The city is vibrant, interesting, beautiful, historic. We did another Princess "on your own" tour to get into town, then the hop-on hop-off - take the green ones because they have live narration. The red ones are taped. The Royal Mile is great, the castle is amazing and impressive, the shopping is wonderful in the "new" city. All in all a terrific place. This is a really fun cruise with a lot of very interesting ports, but be prepared for some cool and rainy weather. I would wait until at least early June to do it, as there are a lot of tender ports and the two cruises before ours in May had to skip several ports due to bad weather.
