Default Dollar to Euro

Will be traveling on the Jewel Transatlantic April 29-May --Can you convert US dollars to Euros on the cruise ship. We will use a credit card for most purchases, but is the dollar accepted otherwise? (Portugal, Italy, France and Barcelona)

The ship's exchange rate is FAR from what you can get on land. My advice buy a few Euros at home before you leave, then use ATMs as you go (readily available) withdrawing small amounts as you need them.

MUSS,

Most merchants in Europe do not accept dollars at all, but there are currency exchanges on nearly every block in most major cities so it's quite easy to convert dollars to euros in any downtown area. Most merchants do accept Mastercard and Visa, but not for small purchases (the typical minimum is about twenty euros). Also, taxis and vendors at tourist attractions typically do not accept any credit cards so you'll need some euros for them.

Overall, it's best to bring a couple hundred euros with you. I also recommend buyiny your transfers (airport to pier and pier to airport) within Europe through your cruise line to minimize your need for cash.

Norm.

Take Euros with you or withdraw from ATMs.
There used to be lots of exchange offices in major cities, there are far fewer these days, since the introduction of the Euro there's much less call for them, and basically nobody accepts dollars.
Taxis and roving salespeople don't take credit cards, almost everywhere else does though, even stalls in fleamarkets sometimes,
