Default Which itinerary is best?

I've been looking at European cruises for Summer 2007. DH and I have long wanted to go to Europe and it will be our 10th anniv. next year. We always cruise with our boys, who will be 9 and 7 years old at that time. I'm wondering if one itinerary is better than another when you have the kids along.

We're looking at RCCL because our kids so love Adventure Ocean and I know they won't mind spending some days there instead of heading off with us for sightseeing. Still, I'm interested whether some ports are more do-able with kids their ages, or there are some ports they'd be very interested in.

Margie,

I've been looking at European cruises for Summer 2007. DH and I have long wanted to go to Europe and it will be our 10th anniv. next year. We always cruise with our boys, who will be 9 and 7 years old at that time. I'm wondering if one itinerary is better than another when you have the kids along.

There are so many attractions in every European port that you and yorr sons will not be bored no matter which itinerary you choose. As a result, shore excursions tend to be "full day" affairs with lunch included -- and I strongly recommend shore excursions as the best way to see European cities. Many attractions have very long lines (about two hours is typical), but the shore excursions have prearranged times so they bypass the lines for general admission and go right in when they arrive.

Now, I presume that you will go to Europe during your sons' summer school vacation, but I don't know the exact timing of thei vacation. The Mediterranean tends to be quite hot and humid in the summer. In fact, some countries literally shut down for the entire month of August and people go either to the mountains or to the beach to escape the heat. The end of June, July, and the first part of September are not much cooler. If you are going to Europe during that time of year, a cruise to the northern part of Europe (British Isles, Norwegian Fjords, Scandanavia, or the Baltic, for example) would be a much better choice. Bear in mind that many of the churches and other attractions on the tours do have very strict dress standards (they typically require clothes to cover your shoulders and your knees, regardless of gender, and no plunging necklines), especially in the Medterranean region.

Finally, consider booking a pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel stay through your cruise line so you will have some time to see the cities of embarkation and debarkation.. If you book the hotel through the cruise line, the hotel package includes transfers and baggage handling between the hotel and the pier.

Norm.

Default So much to choose....

If you want guaranteed sunshine, then Italy, Greece, Croatia, North Africa, canaries, Spain need to be chosen...volcanoes ( Etna) and F1 (Monaco) or football (Barcelona) might catch the kids' imagination . If weather isn't important them consider Norway and the Artic circle. Catch the train from Vik to Flam and see the amazing scenery....visit Iceland etc. Aurora on P&O has a fab kids club.
