Hi Arie, if you are travelling in a group, then taxis aren't going to work out too expensive - agree the price before taking one though.

However, there is an excellent train service that runs right along the south coast & into Italy, the trains are regular, clean & inexpensive. Also most of the staitons only have 2 platforms, so not much chance for getting it wrong.

If you do take the train, it is a short downhill walk from Monaco/Monte Carlo station into the main town.

As with all DIY touring, we recommend that you make your way there in the morning to make sure you don't miss the last tender back to the ship. Monaco isn't that far away, so a taxi wouldn't be too bad, but bus services tend to take the scenic routes to pick up from all the villages in the hills.

Hope this helps, and that you have a great time,

Alan & Katrina

Yes,

As long as your ship is in port for a full day, there is plenty of time to do this in one day. For timetables & prices, the French Railway (SNCF) website (in English) is http://www.sncf.com/indexe.htm.

The journey each way is about an hour depending on which train you take, and the price around €15 return.

hope this helps,

Alan

Hi Arie, always a pleasure to help ....

In Venice the cruise ships are usually sent round to the back of the city, which is a more industrial area, but you can either make your own way on foot to the centre, or buy an all day ticket for the Vaporetto water buses, then you can hop on & off as you like. The waterbuses also go out to the Lido and up to the islands of Murano & Burrano where the glass blowing displayes can be seen.
http://www.actv.it/english/navigazio...iffe_vaporetto
The service is very frequent, but as always make sure you have time to get back to the ship - it's a long swim back to the Sates ;o)

Livorno is a little harder, there is usually a shuttle bus that drops you in the centre, and if you are early enough you can catch a bus to the train station & from there take a very cheap ride into Pisa, Florence, or Lucca. The trains to Florence (Firenze) & Pisa are direct, but for Lucca you have
to change onto a local train. If you do decide on Lucca, then with a bit of map planning you can get off the train on the return journey one stop short of Pisa & walk down 2 short roads straight into the area with the Leaning Tower & Duomo. But if you are going to walk back to the main station, make certain you have a good map, as the route back to Pisa Centrale isn't vefry well marked - if time allows it is a lot easier to return to the local train. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
You can see both Florence & Pisa in the same day, but it is very hectic.
We have never been to Messina, and are going to Naples for the first time later this year - where we are hoping to see Ercolane & Vesuvius, so sorry but we can't help with either of those.

If you've got any more questions, feel free to ask, and we'll do our best to answer them.

Happy cruising

Alan & Katrina

Hi again Arie, yes you will be able to buy tickets at the main station in Cannes, make cure you buy the ticket back as well, as it'll save time at the other end.

Norway - one of our favourite areas, so fresh & clean. The Baltics are also wonderful if you prefer cities to scenery. If you let us know which ports or Fjords you are thinking of, we'll give you whatever details we can for each.

Enjoy the weekend,

Alan & Katrina

We visited Cannes while on the Carnival Freedom and booked Carnival's Monaco, Monte Carlo excursion. As luck would have it, we found that there was a bus strike. Carnival refunded our money, but offered us a free train ride to Monte Carlo. From there we took a bus to Monaco. The problem was that, by the time we made it to Monte Carlo, we only had a couple of hours left before we had to meet the guide to go back to the train.

This was the only port where we tendered in. The passengers who had booked Carnival excursions were first off the ship. Those who did not book and had private excursions were last off (around 11:00 a.m.).

We did enjoy the train ride going but not on return as it was Friday afternoon rush hour and we got separated boarding the train. We only found seats and each other (lol) for the last ten minutes of the ride.

Wish we had done what some fellow passengers did. They were off the ship around 11:00 and took the train for a short ride to EZE. They walked around and shopped then spent the rest of the day at the beautiful beach and had a wonderful day.
