One word of caution. If you decide to take a taxi rather than public transport, make certain that you ask the price first.
A works colleague of mine took an official taxi from LHR to our offices, a journey of less than 100 miles & was charged £310 !!! When I phoned the Public Carriage Office (Their governing body), I was given a real run around, getting the same person 3 times, and ending in several dead ends.
Needless to say, I eventually gave up trying, so they got away with the charge

Thanks for the heads up with hiring a taxi. I will make sure I ask price in advance should I decide on taxi verses public transportation.

Default London Airport to Southampton

Check out the National Express Bus Line website. You can get pricing and schedules and book online if you wish.

Heathrow to Southampton is a great run, about 2 hours & drops you off just a couple of miles from the terminals. Gatwick on the other hand isn't such a good run as the coach usually goes round the houses to get there. You may even have to take one to Heathrow, then change there, not a big problem as the coaches all use the same pickup/drop off point.

The URL http://www.nationalexpress.com/home/hp.cfm should take you there, also keep an eye on the site for 'Fun Fares' which start from a £1, not sure if they ever do them from the airports, but we weny up to London & back yesterday from Southampton for £12 (1 ticket at £1 e/w, the other at £5 e/w). Great bargain.
