Tapas means little dishes.
I don't know any tapas bar in Barcelona. When I eat them I usually go to Castelldefels. It's a village near Barcelona, in the beach.
I tell you what can you eat in Spanish (well, what I like the most...):
- Gambas
- Croquetas
- Berberechos
- Patatas bravas
- Chipirones
- Calamares a la romana
- Sepia a la plancha (only in some bars)
- Boquerones
...

We usually ask for 7-8 dishes for 4 people; and then we eat a very big ice ceam.

But with this I don't mind that you shouldn't be careful.
Sorry, caballita (I love your user name by the way - studied a little Spanish at school and loved it also), yes, pickpockets are everywhere. I should know that since I lived in London for years. In fact my only bad experience in this regard happened in Paris on the metro. New York is certtainly not better either. I didn't mean to put people off Barcelona, especially since I'm a Barcelona nut!

Thanks for the tip about 'menu del dia'. I remember taking advantage of it a few times and my husband and I found it very good value but the tapas I just love. There are lots of tapas bars now in London, some in the US too but it's hard to find authentic ones reasonably priced.

Have dinner at 8:30pm in Spain when you're on vacations is very early. Spanish people use to have dinner at 10:00 or 11:00 when they (in this case, us) don't have to go to work or school the next day.
But on turistic places bars are opened all day. You can go to have dinner at the time which you want and you will always found somewhere to eat well.

By the way... at what time do American people use to have lunch and dinner?
I ask it because on 8/16 (this Sunday!) I'm going to a cruise on the NCL Gem and I think that a lot of people will be American because the boat is American, and I wanted to know it.

Default things to do in barcelona

where are you going on your cruse. I haven't been on the Gem, but my mother in law did a cruise out of Barcelona last year to Italy. She didn't go to Naples, so I didn't go with her. Americans eat all hours of the day, the restaurants are never closed like in Europe; so you can ponder anywhere. Dinners are anywhere from 5:00 on, some restaurants are booked around 8:00 PM. Enjoy yourself and thank you for the information on tapas bars. I think I will venture off to hard rock (to get a pin) and then wonder around the market near la ramblas and then check out the little cafes in the area at night. I wanted to go to the casino also, maybe at night before the cruise.
