Default When is "holiday"?

Planning a cruise to the Greek Isles in 2010. Someone suggested we avoid cruising while Europeans are on holiday to ease crowding in ports. I understand that many European companies do provide an extended closure so their employees can go on holiday. Is holiday observed at a fixed time or does it vary by company/country. If so does it peak at a certain time? And finally, how much should I really plan around it?

Thanks,

Hi Bob, traditionally the Central European countries have a habit of closing up shop & all heading south to the Med for the whole month of August.

Most still book land based vacations, but it will certainly be busier both on the ships and in port at that time.

The UK also has the school holidays at this time, and prices for all holidays seem to jump quite a bit.

Hope this gives you some forewarning and help,

Alan & Katrina

When I travel in Europe I also generally tend to notice a big difference traveling in the month of August- everything is definetely much more crowded, more chaotic. I personally prefer to travel in the fall, when children are back in school and most people are working again. Big difference!

I would advise against travelling in July and August. Everywhere becomes very crowded during those months and the weather can also be very hot.
Best months are May, June and September. Great weather, comfortable to move around in, and less crowds and cheaper prices.

I would be careful with May; that is the month wherein the French need to use up previous year's vacation. When you get 46 days of vacation per year (in addition to holidays), that is a lot of vacation time to take.

I traveled in both July and August this year; no problems for either. You do need to be careful heading to restaurants as they will all have a closing period for a few weeks in the summer; thankfully, not all at the same time.
