Dubrovnik,Kudiashi,Santorini,Corfu.. What should we do in port?
Dubrovnik,Kudiashi,Santorini,Corfu.. What should we do in port? This will be our 12th cruise, but first in Europe. Does anyone have and comments about these ports? What to do? What NOT to do? We are in our 40's and active. We sail May 1st 2010 so the weather should be nice. Are there any beaches worth going to? Any comments would be appreciated!
ps-We want to find a guided tour to Ephesus that doesn't include being stuck in a high pressure rug sales pitch....we have heard nightmare stories....

Dubrovnik -walk around the old town. It's wonderful. You don't need a tour/guide if you can get your hands on Rick Steves's guidebook. He indicates a self guided walking tour.
Santorini -absolutely go to the village of Oia. Here's the thing. If you take a ship tour it will get you there with minimal hassle because the ship will tender you to a dock where there will be tour buses waiting. However, you will have very limited time in the town. Not so wonderful. If you do your own thing, you must get off the ship as early as possible, take the tender (it's always a tender in Santorini) but this tender for independent passengers will take you to the dock where you must purchase a cable car ticket up to the top (the capital, Fira). From there you must walk to the bus station and purchase a ticket to Oia. Sounds difficult but it isn't. The biggest thing to remember about doing this is that you MUST get on an early bus back to Fira to get the cable car down back to the ship's tender. Go early because the local buses fill up with passengers all doing the same thing. In a pinch you can take a local taxi back from Oia to Fira but it will cost you some Euros.
Corfu - do your own thing. There is a local bus that will take you to Corfu town. Get a self guided walking map (one of the guidebooks, like Fodors, Frommers) and have a ball. Stop for lunch -the baked feta is to die for.
Kushadasi - can walk around the town and bargain in the bazaars. Wonderful things to buy but everyone will be grabbing for your attention. Haggle and you'll get good prices. If you want to see Epheusus take a guided tour. Some do the private tours. I found the ship's tours to be just fine.
If beaches are what you want, I believe there is a local bus to Kalimari. Same instructions as for Oia above. Do it on your own.
