Hawaii with a 3 yr old

We are considering the new NCL Pride of America for 2004. My daughter will be almost 3 and it would be her 4th cruise, so I pretty much have cruising with a toddler down! However, I need help on port activities that would be appropriate in Hilo, Kona, Maui and Kauai. Are we better off with ship excursions or expolring on our own? We also plan to stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki beach for 3-5 days precruise so Oahu ideas are welcome too!

Dear Jess:
You came to the right spot. I just got off the NCL Star with my 2 year old and 10 year old. We loved it as well as Hawaii. See my article posted here on the cruise.
The Pride of America will be even better since you don't have to sail all the way to Fanning Island and will have more time in Hawaii. By the end of this month, I will write and post another article on our trip -- this one will be on what to do with kids in Hawaiian ports. Stay tuned...
