We'll be traveling Eastern Carribbean. Do my kids ages 10 and 11 need passports for any of the following: Nassau, St. Thomas, St. John, or Labaddee? Don't want to spend extra $150.00 if their birth certificates would do. How strict are they?
I would ask the cruise line their policy. Personally, in this day and age of tight security, I find passports to be the smoothest way to go. You should also check with your airline (if you need to fly to the port) what their policy is too.

Rina, for now all you need for the kids is the long-form raised seal copy of their birth certificates and a picture id (school id' is fine). Check back with your TA a couple of months before you sail as immigration laws are getting tighter and tighter.
I got passports for my two children before we cruised last fall, and I don't remember exactly, but I think it was only $40/each for the passports for them (they need to be renewed every 5 years, rather than the 10 years for adults). And they came very quickly...in just a few weeks. I didn't want to risk losing their original birth certificates, so I went the passport route., and used them as their ID for the planes too.
