I have been on a cruise without my family but this summer (6/13) we are taking a family cruise on Carnival Elation. My kids range in age from 12 - 16 and as my name says - all boys.
What I would like to know is what is there for them to do on the ship? We have talked to Carnival but they just give the promotional spill. Will they be bored in the "Camp" program? What excursions are best for a family (and cheap).
We are getting two inside cabins besides each other - 1 with quad sleep the other a king.
Any advice, suggestions or thoughts would be wonderful.
Don't worry they'll have a blast. My kids (10, 12, 15 & 19) love to cruise. They do some stuff in the camp programs and some with us. There's so much to do they won't get bored. My kids all like to go to the shows and dinner with us. We bring walkie talkies with us to keep in touch while we're on the ship. I've booked some excursions through the ship and some on my own. I've found, in general, that it is a little cheaper to book through an independent operator than on the ship. We've always done the two inside cabins either next to each other or across the hall and it's worked out fine. I do bring a "baby monitor" so I can keep track of what's going on in the "kids" room.
Whether or not your boys like the kids program will probably depend on how many kids are on board. My 13 yo didn't care so much for the teen program, but mostly because it was older teens.
He did however, enjoy all the games and most of the shows on board. He never got bored and had a blast! Bring LOTS of money for the arcades - they are terrific.
Yes, by all means book shore excursions. They are cheaper off the ship, but it depends on your comfort level when it comes to booking it yourself.

To "all boys":
We are taking our 4 children (2 girls 11 and 10, 2 boys 6 and 3) on Elation in August. I would love to hear all about your experience on the Elation with your children when you return.
Have you decided on what you will do at each port? We were interested in the cave tubing in Belize, but don't think our boys can go due to their ages. We went to Chankanaab on our last cruise with just my husband and I, and we think we may want to go to a more 'natural' beach setting in Cozumel this time.
Do you know if they have Camp Carnival activities while at port? We aren't sure that we would want to leave them behind, but want to know if that is an option.
