Someone else recently posted a similar message (see 10/18-- Surprising kids message) and they got very good response w/some creative ideas. I suggest you read those posts.
My daughter celebrated her 10th bday at sea and the wait staff sung and brought her a cake. (Let them know once you're on board what day is her bday.) Also, I told the youth counselors and they decorate the kids' room w/balloons for her. Very fun!
Smooth sailing,

I surprised my kids once when we went to Disney World.. I told them I had to go out of town on business, and they were going with me and my husband to take me to the airport. My husband parked the car, and told them they could wait with me until the plane was called. But at check-in, the agent said "oh, I see you are going to Disney World, have you been before?" You should have seen their faces....

to surprise the kids you might try putting a small package together with some of the items you have pregathered for the trip (new swimsuits, goggles, etc.) mail it to them around the time you want to "surpise"-just let them open it and wonder what it's all about then you can surpise them with the trip.

we've celebrated our daughter's birthday on a cruise-we did the cake thing with the staff, but we've also brought some gifts (pre wrapped) along with us for her to open (if you are staying at a hotel the night prior to your cruise you can contact them to see if you can mail a box with the gifts to yourself in care of the hotel-that way you just carry the brown paper wrapped package on board with you and she won't suspect anything). I've also known of folks who have decorated their stateroom doors for birthdays and arranged to have helium balloons in the room as a surprise (ship's services can do this for you).
