We have been on 8 cruises but none with our children. We are planning a fall cruise and are considering the Carnival Glory with our 3 year old.
One review we read says that balcony staterooms have a "glassed-in balcony". Does anyone know if this is true and if so, how high does the glass go? Would it be safe with a 3 year old?
The front of the balcony is glass, with a wooden rail.. about 3 1/2 - 4 ft high.
A 3 yr old would be able to stand easily at the glass enclosure and safely look out at the sea.
You just have to be VERY careful about making sure the furniture on the balcony is kept FAR AWAY from the rail, as these "little folks" will climb up before you can blink... and that could be disasterous.
You cant keep the furniture FAR away from the rail as the balconies are not that big. We keep the door locked and told our son that he was not allowed out there without one of us. At 3 he figured out how to unlock the door, but wouldnt go out there without us. If youre really worried you could bring along a wooden dowel to put in the door track so that it cant open far.
I don't know if your 3 year old is as resourceful as ours is but there are few things she is scared of. A wooden dowel would be enough to discourage most kids, but not ours. When we stayed at an 11th floor oceanfront condo this week it was a real challenge to find a way to discourage d/d from trying to escape to the balcony. I have finally come up with a remedy. At just about any walmart or hardware store you can find "First Alert" instant door and window alarms. They're very inexpensive, and are self adhesive. If by chance the kiddo gets the door open, an loud alarm sounds which will hopefully discourage (scare) the child from attempting that again and it will notify you the door is being opened. If you are afraid the loud alarm will annoy your neigbors, you can change it to a door chime sound. They are very inexpensive and work well. There are four alarms to a package.
We cruised Glory last March and we had a balcony. (we had daughter with us but she was only 9 months). It was glass and I thought it was pretty tall. I am 5'9 and it came up to above my waist. We have a suite on the Legend this April.
Like everyone else said, keep the furniture far away and just stay outside with you child.
