Default get a photo id for your kids before you go

We've cruised before with just her birth certificate and have been ok. This time, they gave us a hard time at miami's port because she didn't have a photo id with her birth certificate.. My daughter is 5, and I guess it never really crossed my mind. I guess I will just go ahead and get her a passport for the future. A question I have... when the new passport law kicks in ...will babies also need one?

I found this on the U.S. Department of State's travelstate.gov website:

Q. Will children be required to present passports under the rule?

Yes, children will be required to present a passport when entering the United States. More information on obtaining a passport for a minor can be found at http://travel.state.gov.

Yes, everyone, no matter how old (young) must have a Passport when the new laws kick in.

From their web site:

"NOTES: All persons must have their own passports, including infants. If you are behind in child support payments, you may not be able to get a passport. See Child Support .

For All Minors Under Age 14 :

* Each minor child shall appear in person.
* All applications for children under 14 require both parents' or legal guardians' consent.
( See Special Requirements for Children Under Age 14 )

For All Minors Ages 14 to 17:

* Each minor child shall appear in person.
* For security reasons, parental consent may be requested.
* If your child does not have identification of his/her own, you need to accompany your child and
present identification.

Although it'll cost you some money, I find it much simpler to have a passport -- got my son's when he was four months old! One less possible problem to worry about when on the road...
Smooth sailing,

After 9/11 and airlines were asking for picture ids, My son did not have his driving license yet and we live in a small town that does not have photo school ids. After the first time trying to explain why he had no picture id, we went to the local Motor Vechile office - they have minor photo ids. He used that until he got his drivers license.
