Excursions - with cruise line?

Hi,
I have read a few reviews where people have booked excursions through private companies at each destination. We will be traveling to Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman next February, and I am wondering if I should book tours through the cruise line, or on my own. I am slightly nervous about missing the ship if I book on my own, but I hear you can save money and often the number of people per excursion is less. I am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions??
