Default bringing liquor back to Texas

At the orientation to the RC ship, the host told us not to worry about bringing alcohol back to Texas from a foreign country because all you have to do is pay duty on it, and it was a small percentage. But, a port cop told me Texas only allows 1 bottle, and any more would be siezed rather than you being charged duty. What's the deal?

Hi, Mike ...

I've e-mailed an authentic Texan to pop over here -- I hope he can answer you.

I have, however, seen him get off a ship with more than one bottle per person and I have a strong feeling that if they'd been confiscated I'd have heard about it.

It's also difficult to imagine "hooch police" and how they would operate.

Mike,

At Pam's request, here's the best I can offer.

When we cross the border into Mexico, adults are allowed to bring back one liter of booze, duty-free. We can bring back as many additional bottles as we want, as long as we pay duty on them. I can't imagine it being any different coming off a ship in Galveston or Houston. That's a federal law, not a Texas law. Hope this helps.

I was on the Rhapsody over Thanksgiving and I had no problem at all. I had 3 bottles of Kahlua, a bottle of Crown and a bottle of Champaign they never asked me we had it on our customs form. There were many others carrying it off in the boxed carriers no problems I guess it depends on the day and what mood they are in.
