1st timer questions!

I'm trying to research mediterranean cruises for my parent's 40th wedding anniversary. Is it important that I use a travel agent or can the cruise be purchased online through discount sites without much hassle? And if they are purchased from a site other than the actual cruise line, will it be possible to sign up for dinner time assignments and shore excursions, etc? I feel like I don't have a clue what I'm doing so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, what is the best option as far as including air and transfers with your purchase, is it a much bigger hassle to arrange your own flights, hotel, etc?
Best locations for staterooms on the ship?
Thanks in advance...

If you haven't done this before I would recommend you go to a local travel agent. If you don't already have one, ask friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, etc. for some recommendations. Another good resource is the Cruise Compete feature on this site. I've used it several times and have been very happy with the service I received. Go to Cruise Shopping , Cruise Quotes and then follow the directions.
