Hello. In my research of online travel sites I have been noticing the room option of "guaranteed stateroom". I would be looking for a "balcony stateroom". How often has a guaranteed balcony ended up being an upgraded room and how often was it a disaster? It seems like since the balcony rooms are more expensive even the "lower quality" ones would still be serviceable. I would be bringing my elderly mother on vacation and would not want to end up in an uncomfortable room. I am considering a caribean or Hawaiin cruise.

It is rare to get an upgrade, but you never know, depends on how full the sailing is. You will certainly get the catagory that you booked, so be sure to book the catagory you will be happy with. You still save a little by booking this way, best of luck.
