What do you bring with you when you leave the ship for the day?
Just curious what everyone brings with them when they leave the ship for the day while at a port of call? Also how do you keep the stuff you bring with you safe? (money,credit card,passport,camera etc)
I have a really neat water-bottle holder, with a shoulder strap and, when there's a bottle in it, an almost invisible zippered compartment and a loop I can hang my sunglasses from. I typically tuck my driver's license, one credit card, and a little local currency if I have it, in the compartment. I don't usually bother with a camera, but when I do there's also enough room in the compartment to tuck some extra batteries. With that, and a hat, I'm good to go.

Perhaps rain gear
Daily ships newsletter with name, address and phone number of ship's agent.
Small first aid kit with band-aids.
Credit card (not in backpack)
Enough cash that it won't be a major problem if lost. Divided between wife and I.
Ship's card.
Camera.
A lot has to do with what we'll be doing and where we are. Sometimes the backpack stays on the ship or is loaded with more or less "stuff".
The key is to not take too much and feel like a pack mule. Credit card, copy of passport, driver's license, cash and ship's card are the only requirements.

Yep, exactly what Mike said!
Most people overlook a very important thing and that is the daily newsletter with the local port authority contact information just in case you have any problems and need to contact the ship.
But we always take a backpack and carry everything Mike has stated.

I would leave your passport in the cabin safe and just bring a copy of it and or a drivers license...Depending on the excursion, you can always bring along a ship beach towel if you will be swimming/snorkeling, etc. Just be sure to return the towel when you return to the ship, otherwise, they will charge you for the cost of the towel..

I try to remember to bring my DW when leaving the ship for the day while at a port of call. My DW is safe when w/me.

Good advice about the passport. I always tell people to make a few copies of their passport; leave one at home with someone just in case you need to have it faxed somewhere and bring a couple of copies with you. But leave the passport in the safe and bring one copy with you into port.
But while you're making copies, scan your passports into a GIF or JPEG file and then email them to yourself. That way if you get stuck, all you need is a computer and a printer so you can print a copy of the picture.
I also suggest scanning all your credit cards as you don't want to carry copies of those, but having them in your email can be invaluable. And when you're creating the email, don't forget to put all the credit card contact phone numbers in the email to yourself.
But you can do the same thing to all important documents, such as your health insurance card.

Thanks everyone this is very valuable information that everyone should know. Here's another question. It's just my wife and I traveling and we plan on doing some water sports etc. obviously I dont want to keep my personal stuff on the beach so what are my options as far as keeping stuff dry and safe. We will both be in the water at the same time.
Depending on the beach, you can sometimes find lockers to store things while swimming/snorkeling. If not, onboard in the gift shop, they will have waterproof containers that you can get. I know some stores locally may sell them, but not sure which, thinking some of the major sporting goods stores.
Couple of things you can do; they make small waterproof containers to put everything in and just take it with you in the water. Problem is, if you're taking a camera with you - now what? They do make lockable containers that also have a wire that you can link through a chair or other object to protect your items. Pacsafe, kyssbags, and secure-it makes some of them, but there are plenty of other products out there.
If you're just taking a few items and don't have to worry about a camera, I simply use a ziplock bag and put it in the zippered pocket of my swimsuit.

The camera shouldnt be an issue. I have a Fuji XP which is waterproof upto a certain depth. My trunks have a side pocket so If we plan right I should beable to get everything in small ziplock (sandwich size) and fit it into my side pocket. I want to have a good time and not have to worry about losing our stuff the whole time.

The new generation of underwater cameras are great! So much better than the old ones and definitely better than those cheap disposable kind.
I bought the Canon Powershot D10 underwater camera that I absolutely love! Took some awesome pictures with it in Tahiti, including some amazing video when I was snorkeling with the sharks!

I carry my wallet but it only has a credit card, drivers licence and Ship card in it, I always carry cash in my front pocket or elsewhere.

Thank you all for your info. It was very helpful I am sailing on the Carnival Legend Oct 28 to Western Caribbean and I am first time cruiser. I'M SO LOOKING FORWARD TO IT and of course I'm a little anxious. Traveling Solo!!!!!!!!
Interesting timing of this thread. I just returned from buying a small waterproof "pocket" that hangs from your neck. It is big enough to hold a credit card, license, and some cash. It was 11 dollars and change and I bought it at eastern mountain sports. You can find them on line or at any place that sells kayaks or water related activity gear.
I am sailing on Oct. 27th on Oasis and its my first cruise also. Believe it or not, this has been one of my only concerns of the trip, what to do with my stuff to keep it safe and dry. So thank you for this thread!
Congrats Kerr Met, Going on your first cruise will be so exciting, especiall on Oasis of the Seas...Sounds like you have done a lot of research, you should have a stress free vacation...What islands will you be visiting? Cruising East or West Caribbean?
A good website to find out what to bring on a cruise ship is, Packinglistplace.com. Look under the cruise ship listing. That should give you most of the information that you seek. Make sure you print out a list for both of you, that way, you won't get confused about what you are packing. It also gives you extra space to write in something that you might not see on the list that you need to carry with you.
You definitely want to carry all your essentials with you on your carry on bag, because it will be several hours before you see your other luggage that will be delivered to your cabin. You will probably need to bring a formal outfit for 1 formal night, if you want to. To cut down on the packing, try to have garments that you can mix and match for different look

My best advice on what to take on a cruise is simple;
Take half as many clothes as you think you should pack and it'll be twice as much as you will need.
And take twice as many pictures as you want to take and it'll be half as many as you should have taken.
