Default Considering cruising....

Hi! I've been wanting to take a family cruise for several years. It seems we can never afford it. My DH and I have 3 children: 16, 11, & 8. Whenever I click on a discounted cruise, it's always for a family of 4. We live in southwestern VA. We go to the beach about twice a year, but only in Spring and Fall because of the cheaper rates and not as crowded. Any advice on the best way to go to get the best rates? Our teen doesn't want to go because she's afraid that she will be left with no one to hang with. She'd like to take a friend, but the friend would have to pay her way. I have a hard time convincing DH that it is affordable when we see $400-$600 PP (or more). We have a house booked at the beach for next June for less than $500 (Outer Banks, NC). ANY ADVICE is welcome! Thank you!

Cruises come in all types of pricing. If you have time to research you can find some good deals. But, for a family of four, you won't find anything less than $500(price for your beach rental), also there are hidden fees such as driving or flying to cruise, passport if you don't already have one. Gratuities that are added on to pay for your cabin attendant.

Default Thanks!

Thanks, Timmyk! Where are some places to search? VacationsToGo keeps popping up. Is that legit? Any other places with great deals?

Vacations To Go is a legitimate seller of travel and many people are happy with them. You can do better.

I suggest you give a cruise specialist travel agent a call. They can look for the best deals for your budget. If the budget is too low you may not be able to do a cruise at this time. For a seven day cruise, $400/pp, for an outside or balcony, is a good deal. You could get less on an inside cabin but it's best to have an agent check this out.

As Timmy said, there are other expenses to consider. There will be $336 in gratuities, on board costs for drinks and specialty items. You can keep those costs lower by buying a soda card or just drinking the free beverages. Water, iced tea, lemonade, coffee, and "milk during dining hours".

You may need a passport, but it is not a requirement for cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean that leave and return to the same port. There is also transportation costs, like airfare, gas, hotel, etc., depending on how you get to the port.

Call an agent, give them your budget and see what they can come up with.

Take care,
Mike

If you are planning on cruising during a school break, there should be plenty of teens for you daughter to hang out with, she may want to think about it...
