Default Eastern Caribbean excursions

Hi everybody! This is actually my second cruise, I did Oasis, western caribbean previously. That was a much more adventureous cruise. I am headed out on the Allure April 10th and this time i am looking for relaxation and beaches.

So here is my question.......I know that everyone says book excursions through the cruise line. But if i am just doing beaches, I am thinking I will just take a cab and head to a beach. What do you all think, is that safe and reasonable?

I am specifically thinking Blue Lagoon in the Bahamas, Magen Bay beach in St. Thomas, and either Great Bay beach in St Martin or heading over to St John and Trunk Bay beach. Any input or suggestions totally welcome and i am open to suggestions also!

Thank you in advance. I LOVE this forum, it was so very helpful last time and everyone is so friendly.

Kerry

Don't know where you read that 'everyone' suggests booking shore excursions from the cruise line, because many people who are regular cruises will tell you that's definitely not necessary. We've been on 48 cruises around the world and much prefer doing our own thing or booking independent excursions. I would suggest that if you feel more comfortable with an organized excursion that you book with an independent company such as Shore Trips. If you're comfortable doing your own thing, then there is absolutely no problem with taking a taxi to any of the places you've mentioned. The only exception would be it's cheap and easy to rent a car in St. Maarten as there are several kiosks right at the pier and this is something we do every time we're there.

Like Pete said ...

One note for planning, you want to choose between Magen's Bay in St. Thomas and Trunk Bay in St. John. If you are really just interested in the beach I think I would just stay on St. Thomas, if you want to snorkel head over to Trunk Bay.

On St. Martin, Grand Bay in Phillipsburg is okay, you have plenty of bars and restaurant, and shops, nearby. And if you are in good health you can easily walk it. However, for a little something different you can head to Maho Beach and watch the planes come and go, or you can head to the French side. There are a couple good websites detailing the beaches of St. Martin.
