Default Handicapped Accessible River Cruises - Europe

Hello,

My mom and I would like to take a river cruise in Europe. I use a wheelchair but can walk a little bit. Does anyone know of a cruise that is accessible?

Thank You

First, talk to your agent, as they can provide a wealth of information concerning what river cruises and river boats are best suited for your needs, lifestyle, and budget.

With that said, some river boats are a bit more capable of handling wheelchairs than others. However, please keep in mind that sometimes river cruising is not very conducive to those with limited mobility. For example; sometimes you have to walk from one boat, through another boat to get to the pier. I've seen 3 and 4 ships tied up side by side in some ports. Plus, river boats are more affected by high and low tides than ocean-going ships. So, sometimes the ramp from the boat to the pier can be a bit steep. And often, the crew is instructed not to assist with wheelchairs because of this, as well as the ramp being very narrow, due to the liability factor.

Here is just one river cruise line's policies concerning accessibility - specifically read Sections 36 - 39; http://www.avalonwaterways.com/Terms/

Pretty much all the river cruise companies have the same policies.

I'm definitely not wanting to turn you off to the idea of doing a river cruise, but it's important to understand all the barriers and limitations you'll encounter. For example, I'm not aware of any river cruise boat in Europe that has a ramp or elevator that goes to the sun deck. So, if you want to go up there, you have to be able to climb stairs. Also, while Europe is slowing becoming more accessible, it's definitely not easy to get around - mainly due to the historic age of the famous buildings.

But again, talk to your agent, as they will know your specific requirements and they can offer some options and ideas.

Pete

MS Alegria (Adelle Cruises) is specialized on this. But I would expect
a lot of the boats in europe to have multiple cabins for people in a wheelchair.
