Thumbs up Credit card information on phone or 2-3 emails

Is it safe to pay a Cruise deposit by giving your credit card info on phone or 2-3 separate emails to an Online travel agent in another country?
Because he says that he is a smaller company and doesn't have a direct booking facility (like the large OTAs).
Nor can he provide a web link to make a secure payment.
The company is legitimate and rated A+ on BBB. In the cruise agent business for over 12 years. They tend to undercut the main OTAs and offer a lower price (inclusive of port fees and taxes) in order to get more customers.
Only 1 complaint of "bait and switch" on the internet, where they offered a lower price initially and then raised it later, saying that it was a genuine mistake.

I would not trust doing business with the firm that you described. No way would I send my credit card number to that online travel agent.

I agree with Manny on this one!

I've had my own business for 15 years and I always tell my clients that I would prefer them to call me with their credit card information. It's the safest way to handle it. Plus, we don't keep the information anywhere, so unfortunately they will have to call me each time they want to make a payment. A bit of a hassle, but it's for their security.

If they want to send me the information in an email, I always suggest doing half of the information in 2 different emails.

Or, if they would prefer to do it online, then they can do so through our secure online website.

However, and here's the thing you need to be VERY careful about; make sure that the agent is not the one who will be charging your credit card. We are an agent for the cruise line and the cruise line will be the one charging your credit card. To do this, we either call the cruise line and give them the information or we log onto their secure booking site and enter the information.

And lastly, you never want to do business with anyone online that is offering prices less than what the cruise line is charging. Yes, sometimes they may have some group space that could result in a lower price, but you have to be very careful, as the cruise lines do not allow companies to advertise rates lower than what they're charging. It's a form of 'discounting' and if they're caught, the cruise line will revoke their ability to sell for them. Obviously, not someone you want to do business with.

And as for the BBB, often many of these online sites do not tell you where they are physically located, so even if you wanted to file a complaint, you don't know where to file it. There are more websites that do not have a local number or address shown on their websites than there are who do. And anyone can build an online site - doesn't mean their licensed or competent.

Bottom line is find yourself a good reputable agent and stick with them; there in it to build a working relationship with you based on service, not solely based on price.

Think of it this way; do you really believe an online site who is discounting is going to call you to let you know the price went down?

Hope this helps, but personally, I would be very leary to do business with someone like the one you're describing.

Pete

Default One time use CC number used online

Greatquestion. Some Credit card companies will offer a way to pay using a one-time use number that is tied to your credit card. Call your customer service number and see if they offer this service.
