Default Traveling with luggage on foot to port

So I always seem to find that I need to stay in a hotel the night before a cruise no matter what city the ship is leaving from because it's nearly impossible to book a flight that arrives at a cruise port city 3 hours before a cruise. Ships leave by 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning so...
If my husband and I are staying in the French Quarter is it safe to walk to the port dragging all our luggage and personal belongings behind us? I hear it's about a 15 minute walk... that's fine, but is it safe? Are we sitting ducks? Should we just call a cab?

You'll have to provide more information on your cruise, because all the ones I know about that leave out of New Orleans do so at 4:00pm. I don't know of any ships that leave at 8:00am or 9:00am.
