There are very few choices for only stopping once on the way to Budapest. It is possible if I fly out of Orlando, but 4 hours in PHiladelphia - where all I am required to do is find my next gate - are too many. Is PHL a boring airport in the international flights terminal? Should I t ry to find a flight with a shorter, but not too short, connection time? The advantage is not having to stop in a European airport, which I want to avoid if possible.

If you want to avoid a European connection, I would take that connection. Find your gate, enjoy a nice meal (cause what you get on the plane might not cut it) and just deal with it. In some airports (sorry, I am not familiar with this one), it could take some time just to get to the gate.
