WHY NO FREE DRINKS ?

...........Having gambled in Vegas, Atlantic City, Biloxi & Connecticut the ONE question that I have is.........Although all of the above venues furnish " free drinks " while Gambling......Why do Cruise Ships invariably charge for alcohol in their Casinos while you are Gambling ?? ..........I do recall that on certain Cruises; " free drinks " ( no choice; everyone gets the same drink...such as Whiskey Sours in plastic cups ) have sometimes been " handed out " during the first hour that the Ship's Casino may open in the Afternoon ( usually from 3-4 PM or 4-5 PM ).....Other than the above; I know of no other " free drinks " offered in a Ship's Casino ? Does anyone know of a Ship or Line that does offer " free drinks " in the Casino ? .........Don K.

Re: WHY NO FREE DRINKS ?

Sorry, I don't know of any who offer free drinks.

This is my theory on that: Vegas, and Atlantic City, and other land based resorts are attracting high rollers with plenty of money to burn. The casino staff sees the benefit in offering free drinks to loosen them up and get them to stay at the table longer. Businesswise, it make financial sense to them.

On cruise ships the customers are generally not high rollers and are on a vacation budget. They are not serious gamblers and will walk away from the table when their $50 stake is gone. Some of them have the children they have to attend to. Some of them are scheduled for the show, or dinner, or something else. In general, the cruiseship has figured it to be beneficial to charge for the drinks.

Vegas has figured out they make more by giving it away, while the cruiselines has figured they make more by charging.

Thomas

Hello,

Well....free drinks are different in Vegas as compared to the other places.

I went to Vegas, stayed at the Luxor. The server came around and asked for drinks. I said a beer, expecting some crappy draft, and she said what kind, i said any...she said what kind again and i said Coors Light. She brought me a longneck. She got a great tip and i asked her to come back often! I do not understand why A.C. and Biloxi serve you some crappy draft???????????????

I play the $25.00 blackjack table, and how would you feel having to pay almost $3.00 for a bottle of WATER? Didn't expect free cocktails but was surprised that I had to pay for water.

In vegas, the tables are the profit center, on a ship drinks are a profit center. Not all but some cruise lines contract out the casino so why should the cruise line give away their booze?

They comp my meals!
Seriously though, I have seen the pit boss buy drinks for a big bettor. The boss told the waiter to charge it to the casino and he did. No one else at the table got free ones though.
Another time a friend of mine was playing the table maximum for several hours and he bugged the boss for a long time and they said they would send a bottle of wine to their dinner table that night and they did.
One good thing is that I drink less when I have to pay for them.

Don't know if this is a legitimate explanation or not, but... the casino is operated by an independent company and NOT part of the cruise line (same with the spa). They keep all their revenues separate, and I doubt the cruise line is going to ply gamblers with free drinks when they stand to gain nothing by it. I suppose the casino could run up a tab, but why bother when things seem to be working out just fine this way? I would probably drink more if they were free, but I don't gamble any less because they're not!
Cheers, MaryC

I never have a problem getting a Michelob bottle at The Grand in Gulfport or Beau Rivage. Do you ask for draft or something?

I would also think that land based casino's are trying to keep you at their establishment and not go elsewhere for your entertainment. Going elsewhere is not a concern of theirs on board a cruise ship.

You can ask for a glass of water. The waitress don't care for that but they bring it.

In a land based casino, you are more likely to get your drink and continue gambling. On a cruise ship, word would get out that you can go sit at a machine and drop a few coins...get your free drink and go elsewhere on the ship with it. I guess that might be another reason to charge for them.

Re: WHY NO FREE DRINKS ?

RCCL and many carnival boats have recently purchased their casinos from those outside companies. Vegas and the cruise ships are very different. Cruise ships do not want experienced gamblers. I have never lost money on a cruise ship. I know how to count cards and know basic blackjack strategy. The casino rarely watches for card counters unless they bet huge.
And when a casino sells their drinks figure if they charge $5 a drink they are profitting after the second drink of the bottle. BIG DIFFERENCE from AC/vegas/etc Cruise lines get everything duty free. Under $10 a bottle. If they give away liquor in a casino you will see people play for 5 mins just to get a drink
