Gambling on Hawaii cruises
I know that cruises which originate and terminate in Hawaii can not have gambling at all on the cruise, but what are the rules for ships that originate on the U.S., Canadian or Mexican west coast and cruise to Hawaii? Must they close their casinos between Hawai ports and only reopen them when/if they head back to the mainland?

Nope.. the casinos on in transit ships are open after leaving each Hawaiian port.

I know... I'll be gambling my money away in May on the Serenade <G>

Re: Gambling on Hawaii cruises
My dad came to visit me in Kauai in February on the Crystal Harmony, and not only did they not get to gamble, but all of the slot machines had to be removed from the ship in Honolulu and left there for the entire cruise. The casino was locked up. They had to reinstall the slot machines after midnight the last night of the cruise. Needless to say, that cruise ship never wants to come back to Hawaii again.

My understanding
I believe that according to Maritime Law, any cruise ship leaving US waters is required to stop at one foreign port during the cruise to be able to offer gambling. Hence, we flew to Hawaii and sailed home. Gambled all the time while not in port, however, we stopped in Ensinada Mexico, debarked, walked through customs with our luggage, boarded a bus and were driven to San Diego when we got back thus fulfilling the requirement. Didn't enjoy that stop much.
