Default Need Cruise Suggestions

My partner, myself and another gay couple are looking to take a cruise. But would like suggestions as to what lines/ships are more 'gay friendly', other than Disney (have done the Disney magic three times), looking for something different.

Was considering either Carnival, Royal Carribean or Princess. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Celebrity! In my experience, they almost seem to PREFER gay passengers (maybe because we drink more and tip better?). I just got back from the Summit in Alaska, with 118 gay/lesbian passengers, and we had a blast.

Celebrity is among the most formal of the cruiselines, so I would only advise against Celebrity if you don't like to get dressed up for dinner.

In addition to Celebrity, I'd also look at Princess. We have been on 18 Princess cruises and have had no problems at all and are always treated with the utmost respect.

Princess also gets my vote. Did the Ocean Princess 3X and loved it - they'll have FOD party announcements in their daily poop sheet. Also consider QE2 and QM2.
And (dare I say it?) I did a week on Carnival Victory and had a great time, but I think it may have been a fluke.
Consider RSVP all-gay cruises too - I've done 9 of them and love them!

Thanks for the input. I was thinking about Proncess, either the Grand or Golden. I just did not know anyone who has been on eitehr ship. Since I live in Orlando, everything here is cenetred around Disney. We were wanting to look at something different.

So, what are some of the things that keep you going back for more??

Bailey,

Have been on the Grand 4 times (5th time this Thanksgiving), the Star Princess (last week) and am on the Golden Princess in October.

What do I keep going back for? I find Princess to be an overall excellent cruise experience, things are consistent between ships. The crew are friendly, food and service excellent.

I went back to Ocean Princess because I had a really good time on the first one and had good relations with the crew/staff. I was amazed the 2nd and 3rd times back that the Maitre 'd was waiting on the gangplank and welcomed me with open arms and remembered my name! Made me feel special (and, no - we hadn't gotten THAT well acquainted, although I wish we had [8-O) In fact many crew remembered me - guess it depends on how well you tip?
I go back to RSVP because of the all gay ambience that my current home base does not afford. I also like the way they do things (entertainment, gifts, itineraries, parties, etc.)

We were on the Golden last November (eastern Caribbean itinerary). We're booked on it again for New England/Canada itinerary next month.

Almost all of our cruises have been great. The lines I would not try again are Norwegian and Carnival. Celebrity and Princess are at the top of our list with RCI a close third. And we haven't tried HAL yet. Maybe next summer for Alaska.

My partner and I have just booked our 3rd cruise with Celebrity. We recommend them fully!
We have found them gay friendly and have met wonderful people aboard both cruises. (family and non-family alike.) We were on the Mercury in 1999 to Alaska and the Zenith in 2001 to Bermuda.
We are looking forward to sailing on the Constellation to the Caribbean in February 2003....we booked with Pied Piper this time. Have heard positive things about their groups.

Hi Bailey,

I live in Orlando as well and unfortunately I have never been on all those other cruises but my partner and I have been on the new Carnival ships and everyone was respectful. The staff nor passengers ever blinked an eye and we tend to be very affectionate with each other. We can't help but be "normal".

Partner and I live east of Orlando, practically in the heart of cruise country. We have sailed with Carnival, and did not find them to receptive to gay cruisers. Our next sail (7 days from today) is with Celebrity's Millennium to eastern carribbean, and have learned that there will be a couple of hundred "family" on this cruise, due to bookings by Pied Piper and several other TA's. It looks to be a fabulous time.
By the way, Celebrity does tend to be quite liberal in their acceptance. Just MHO.

I see you have gotten lots of messages, everyone has their favorite. Let me add my two cents in, too. First I would ask you, your ages, what time of year you are looking to travel. Then, how long of a cruise were you thinking of and do you have a budget?

I am a former Travel agent an have been on many ships and cruises. All were great, some better than others. My partner and I have been on more than a dozen so together in the last few years. We have done RSVP (all gay and lots of fun) Pied Piper (gay groups on straight sailings) and the regular sailings of different ships.

RSVP:
All gay, FUN, FUN FUN, not cheap, but good value for your money. Mix of 25 - 45 singles and couples into their 70's.

Pied Piper:
Gay groups of 20 to 120 or more. Lots of sailings on all lines to different parts of the world. We like them every much. Have even served as on board host for two sailing with them. Mix of couples and singles, tends to be 40 plus in age. Favorite ship they use is CARONA of Cunard lines, very upscale, and old world.

The regular cruise:
We like Celebrity, their four newer ships are great. Super service, food, large cabins etc. Have done NCL and met lots of other gays at a FOD party. Their are some great deals out there right now. (800) 231-7447 CRUISEINFO@CRUISEVALUE.COM This is the Cruise Value Center. We have not been able to beat their prices but check around. Remember that the same ship and cabin can differ as much as 70% with the discount travel agents.

No matter what cruise line you choose, you'll find other gay guys, just look around. The cocktail bar before dinner is always a good spot to meet other couples.

Good luck and if you have any questions, e-mail us.

Dan and Peter

PS: We are going a group Pied Piper cruise next June 25, to the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal, why not join us.

Hello,

My partner and I and another Gay couple just returned today from Celebrity (Mercury) 7 days to Western Carribean....We cruise a lot.....Early 40's and late 30's couples....have 85 cruises between the four of us.....Celebrity is at the top for service, food, cabins,,you name it they have it........VERY gay friendly............and lots of the staff is gay....

We met about 15 other folks (almost all couples)....We are pretty mainstream looking folks......but fun......and we actually danced with our partners at a couple of the lounges....a few stares from fellow passengers but no problems.....We always have our beds put together as a king etc....Go for it.....and you will like the service.........and have a good time....

We always meet guys by the pool, spa, or in the lounges.........The gay guys seem to always go to the spa around 5 - 7 pm...(no not for that!)....

Good luck we usually book with cruise lines direct or online.

JIM

Hi;
Like I said earlier, I think NCL and Celebrity are very gay friendly as is Cunard. Cunard's QE-2 and Caronia both have a large gay following and offer a different cruise experience.

Since you'll be with another couple you will have each others company to enjoy. If you are looking to meet lots of other gay couples try on of the group sailing offered by Pied Piper Travel or on of the other gay cruises agentcies.

Hope this helps,
Dan and Peter.

PS: Hosting of small group of guy son Cunard's Caronia, 06/25/0. For more info go to www.piedpipertravel.com

My partner and I are also in Orlando and love cruising and have great fun on Royal Caribbean and have always met other gays as well as alot of great straight accepting people. Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, or any of the Voyager class ships get my vote. Next October the new Voyager class ship, Mariner of the Seas will based in Port Canaveral and doing Easter and Western Caribbean! Can't wait!

My partner and I cruise regularly (we are in our mid-40s) and really enjoy SILVERSEA; it does cost a bit more, but we think its worth every penny; from a value point of view, remember that all cabins on Silversea are suites, most of balconies, all drinks are included, and there is no tipping. Thus, your out of pocket expenses are nil, except for a shore excurion - if you do them, or a spa treatment such as a massage. Right now, some of the sailings are available for 50% off under the Simplicity Program. Also, if you do their air/sea program, transfers are gratis, as is a night at a really good hotel precruise, and sometimes cheap business/first class upgrades are offered. Look at the package price, and before you panic, figure out how much a more typical cruise vacation costs IN TOTAL, then compare.

Silversea is great, with a very relaxed and social atmosphere, encouraged by the smaller ships (everyone gets to know eachother, if you want) and gratis drinks.....why not hang at the bar if the champaegne is gratis? We have cruised with Silversea many times now, and there is always a good number of gay passengers, and always interesting and fun people to meet up with. We decided to try Silversea as a once in a lifetime experience, and keep going back for more. On our most recent cruise on the SilverShadow (Nov 1, 2002), we went with nine friends and had a nonstop pary, and the service was incredible; the crew could not do enough for us.

Think about it!

Memories from a 10-day RSVP cruise along the Mexican Riviera in a Carnival "fun ship." The M/S Ecstasy interior looked as tacky as Circus, Circus and the colors were so bright, Helen Keller could have seen them from Catalina. As I got into the elevator, I told one of the other passengers that I almost missed the boat, then added "now that I've seen the carpeting, I almost wish I had." However, there is more to surviving a gay cruise than just ignoring the decor, so this week, I provide a useful guide to surviving your next gay vacation.

1. Limit your luggage.
In order to keep the party going for up to 10 days, the company plans tons of activities, many of which require a new ensemble every few hours. Our cruise included two underwear parties (black and white), a formal dinner, leather party, a coat-and-tie dinner, costume ball, uniform party and swimsuit contest, among countless others. A week before the trip, drag out your suitcases and start filling them with everything you could possibly need. Then, once your closet is empty and you have nine overflowing suitcases and a steamer trunk you can't close, start crossing some of the events and outfits off your list. By the fifth day on the boat, some party people were on the brink of Karen Carpenter-style exhaustion, and it wasn't just the trips to la farmacia either. You can't party every night, so just bring what you can carry in three bags and plan to do laundry halfway through the trip. Less is more.

2. Don't sleep with anyone right away.
Imagine you go down to your favorite gay bar one evening. Suddenly, the doors are locked and you are trapped with everyone who is there for the next 10 days. That's what a gay cruise is like. You may see a guy on the first night who looks hot, but remember, you are going to be seeing him at every meal and every turn until you leave the ship. Don't make your vacation more awkward than it needs to be by having to spend eight days avoiding someone. Scope out the scene on the boat for the first few days and then make your moves.

3. If you travel with your boyfriend, get your story straight before you go.
Many of the couples on these vacations have open relationships or enjoy group sex. Other couples just enjoy being around other gay people and don't swing. Before you go on the boat with your boyfriend, set your ground rules. Once you get on the boat, there will be all sorts of delicious temptations. A couple that isn't on firm ground before the trip will have a hard time keeping their sea legs firmly planted on the floor. Many of the couples who started the trip monogamously didn't end that way (you know who you are!). Communication and honesty are key.

4. Make sure you carry the essentials.
Some people like to decorate their cabin doors with photos of themselves, or with dry-erase boards and Post-it notes to leave messages. This makes it much easier to meet people and find out what their story is. I traveled with a group that had walkie talkies so we could find each other easily at ports of call and around the ship. It saved our bacon on numerous occasions (and it looked cool, too). Some cruises insist on pants for dinner in the dining rooms, so check your itinerary carefully for any essential items like that. Also, even the nicest cruise ships have Motel 6 amenities in the bathroom. If you like your special soap or shampoo, bring it along.

5. Make friends and be nice
A gay cruise is like summer camp, though Kathie Lee's cruise line didn't force us to make wallets, since we were all over the age of 10. Make friends with the people in the other cabins on your floor. Our floor got very social and we had the most fun just chatting in the hallway outside our cabins. It turned out that the lesbian couple down the hall had a cappuccino maker, so there are some rewards for getting to know your neighbors. Be polite to people at dinner or in the elevators or up on deck. You are trapped in a confined space with them for countless days. Pissing people off only makes it feel claustrophobic and leads to angry "U R Stuck Up!!" messages on your dry-erase board. Also, word travels through the boat like wildfire, so keep potential sources of gossip about yourself (like offering sex in the laundry room, that porno you did in college, your addiction to orange Fanta) to a minimum.

My partner and I went on the Grand Princess out of Ft. Lauderdale and did the Eastern Caribbean. I had to drag him along, but he loved it. Big ship (but not overwhelming), classy, great value, lots to do...met many gay men and other couples (I hope so on a ship with 2,400 passengers!). If you seek something mid-priced, but upmarket, I'd suggest this line and this ship.

P.S. Princess will also arrange "friends of Dorothy" announcements in the daily newsletter. Just ask the information desk to include it. what they'll do is find a corner of the ship and put it in for eveyone to meet there at a certain time.

Default PIed Piper Grand in August?

Dan,
I don't see any reference to an August 31, 2003 Grand Princess cruise on the Pied Piper web site. Is this a new addition to their schedule?
