Hi everyone, i found there are many messages concerning Purell and the hygiene condition on cruise. i am a Microbiology scientist working in a metro area medical center of NY city. as a advice, Purell is a good idea but also bring a box of 100 alcohol wipes with you. you can find it in Duane Reade, Rite Aid or other drug stores. Purell is good to CLEAN your hands but alcohol wipes can be used to kill germ on doorknob, toilet handle, your fork, knife and spoon or the edge of drinking glass before you put them into your mouth. Norwalk virus is a minor disease but can ruin your cruising time. this virus can be found mostly in the vomit from an infected individual. so we should use the alcohol wipe everytime we touch the flush handle as well as the faucet of the sink.
PS. germs are more active and replicate faster in spring and summer. be more careful.
the alcohol will evaporate itself as we wait about 5 seconds before putting the utensils into the mouth. while waiting, gently shake it to speed up the evaporation process. Remember how our moms tested our temperature with the thermomter when we were kids?
Rita - Thanks! Do you actually see other guests wiping down their utensils with alcohol wipes or is it the sort of thing where you really don't care in order to stay well? I am very interested! We are sailing April 3rd for the W. Caribbean.
i carry the wipes everywhere and i don't care how people think. maybe to some people i am a little paranoid but i know this is for my health. no one will notice anyway if just rubbing it fast and put it back on table. by the time the food arrives, they will be ready to use. there are few places i use the wipes even before i unpack my luggage, they are the doorknobs, toilet seat, flush handle, faucet. i just disinfect them as soon as i enter my hotel room.
i will be going on cruise the first time this year most likely in Sept on Carribbean Princess 7 nights from FLL. never been on the cruise before because it looks odd for a single lesbian. but i heard a lot of good things about Princess from this site, so i will give it a try. which cruise line you are going? most concern the age group of other passengers. i am 34 yrs, which one you will suggest?
Hi Rita - You have me convinced, you have some very valid points and being in your line of work, I can only imagine the things you have seen in your studies and research. Everything is so germy and so are a lot of people out there.
I have heard Princess is very good and will probably be better for you since you are a lot younger than we are. We are in our early 50's so we like the slower pace of HAL
Thanks for the feedback,
